Ah, the Brits abroad. Doesn't it make you proud?

Regarding getting dressed for the evening. Sharen and I have a code when we spot the bloke out in his shorts and no top with his wife all decked out in a nice dress; we call the man (or sometimes the couple) NEWS.

No Effort What So-ever!

Other codes are:
SH - Sad Hair and refers to any man with a Bobby Charlton or similar, or any woman with a shocking hair style.

PC - Poser chain. Seen a lot in Turkey where inexpensive gold lures men into wearing lavotory chains around their necks; often over their tee-shirts, shirts or whatever.

FUB: Fat Ugly Bugger - applied to either sex where rolls of fat have not been exposed to the sun no matter what angle they lie down or stand up.

RAS: Red And Stupid (or Sore) - silly people who think melanoma is a cocktail or exotic fruit!

And, when we are bored with someone we brush our hair back, firstly with one hand, then the other. This is a sign to wind up the conversation and get the hell out!

Finally, (mostly applied in Mustafa's jewellery shop in Fethiye) when someone has purchased a tasteless piece of jewellery (often big and ugly) we always say, "Mmm, that's different!"

:) :) :)

Michael,
It isn't only the 'Brits' with the unsuitable attire..other nationalities as well...
We always make the effort to look nice in the evenings..often I noticed it was the Brits who did make the effort..and we'd find ourselves surrounded by--Dutch--Germans etc..who hadn't taken any trouble whatsoever in their huge baggy t-shirts/shorts!
Youve listed your pet hates of other holiday makers..d'you know something that drives me up the b----y wall? The 'look a likes'!
By that..I mean when you can hardly distinguish between husband and wife :!:
Woman with exceptionally short 'mannish'haircut and often huge with it!..and I actually saw couples who were dressed the same! Same colour t-shirt..matching shorts etc...in fact ..the bloke often looked prettier than the wife :!:
It seems to be happening more and more..not just on holiday..but here as well.
Are (mostly) older /middleaged women afraid to be feminine?
I say 'Vive le difference' between the sexes..show off your curves ..even if youre no Kate Moss!..be proud of your body..accentuate your femininity..and for god sake...DONT become a replica of your other half :x
Oh Boy! I was glad to get that off my chest :)and hope this doesnt sound too unkind

It's OK Ellie, I have little time for the matching anorak brigade as well, it is not just that there is a difference between men and women but it is also something about not surrending your identity. It also happens when some women dress their daughters as 'mini me' - UGH.

Back to topless and/or nudity and I can assure you of nothing untoward in my next comment, but I do think toddlers running around in nothing but a floppy hat looks so cute (obviously less common these days with the greater understanding of skin cancer). Bless 'em.

Isn't it funning that a pot belly on a two year old is cute and on a forty year old is yuk?

Sorry Will..I didn't mean it to sound that way..I think I was trying to say to Michael..that it isnt only Brits who dress that way..that it applies to other nationalities as well.
Think maybe Ive come across as bit snobby on this one..and I didnt mean to be
I like nothing better than to be a bit scruffy and loll about myself..and I can do this very well :)
But I do like to doll myself up when going out on the town :)..Ellie

Q: is it OK to go topless?

A: only if you need the publicity, and you wear a metal 'solar' nipple medallion

I expect you all thought this topic had gone away but there was a follow up question on that other site asking about nudist beaches on the Algarve and I don't know the answer - are there any official nudist beaches? Or unofficial ones which are commonly accepted?

...........no luck with that nudist beach in Algarve then Maddi...........

but I’ve got something for you: ‘Praia do Meco’. Not Algarve but close to where you will be staying later this year, south of Lisbon. Anything goes: gay, straight, daytime activities, for the less conventional naturist, include naked paragliding competitions. But (I’ve been told) the real daring stuff starts after dark around the campfires.
Enjoy

Nudist beach

Post by biffa »

I don't know but I guess it is official as it has a sign saying Praia Naturista or something.

It is the middle part of that looooong beach between Armação de Pera and Galé. You have Praia Grande where Carlos beach bar is and if you take a walk from there towards Galé (ie direction east toward Albufeira) you will see some pretty amazing things!

Actually rather than purely naturist I think it is a homosexual play area as there seems to be loads of dune action!

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Meia Praia beach close to carvoeiro is a mix of all or nothing in the costume line! All nationalities including Portugese, wear anything from the full cossey to their one button suit (nothing for the uninitiated) and not a cross word is spoken. Go for what ever you feel comfortable with, cover up when you feel the need but from our exoeriance, a beach away from the built up areas has a fair mix of those with and without costumes, large or miniscule. Any degree of personal nudity is fine providing you are comfortable with it yourself and you are aware of your surroundings and you do not offend other nationalities beliefs and religious standings.
Give it a try, you will be suprised how free you feel without clothes, and for interest the naturist movement in Portugal is growing and peoples tolerance increasing.........
