Favas a Moda do Ribatejo= Broad beans Ribatejo style
Just seen the recipe for this in new magazine..looks quite flavoursome..wondered if anyone here has tried it?
It also contains pork and chourico sausage..a combination Ive never had before!
There is also 'Pasteis de Bacalhau' =Salted Cod Cakes
i imagine these may have more 'taste'than with ordinary fresh cod?
Can I also ask..does anyone have a good recipe for 'almond tart'.....I make Pecan tart ..but not sure if recipe would convert to almonds :?
Thanks :)

Ellie so that is what it is called. I had that in Odemira last year. It is stunning, so good, the restaurant used just a chunk of sausage to add flavour. Annie and I were just discussing it today and I was hoping to have some when we come out at Easter (to give the builder a prod). Does you recipe have a bit of soggy bread at the bottom. Seriously good nosh.

I just love computer translation

In one tacho of adobe sets the gravy of coentros, green leves of garlic and onion (rama), the lard ace fine slices and the chouriços of meat meat and the black ace rodelas. Everything with the oil is watered and for top the broadbeans are made use, that must very be tenras.
Tacho is covered and is taken to cook it in fire brando, shaking it strong to hinder that the cooked one if grasps to the deep one of tacho.
The well hot broadbeans, folloied are served with salada of lettuce.

Mine had a bit of tomato in too.

Hi Peter,
You make it sound a 'must' to try! which i will certainly on next visit (May) or even try it out myself.
No..this recipe doesnt have the bread(soggy!).but it is served with lettuce salad..which is usual there i believe ..with broad beans?
This is :beans- lean pork-chourico sau.-morcela whole(like black pudding)-spring onions/garlic/coriander/salt/pepper/pinch sugar. The pork fried in oliveoil/lard.Add the sausages to pork&all other ingredients inc.beans. then cover. The beans cook in the steam--little drops of water are added..and pan shaken now& then to prevent sticking.
Suppose you can add your bread! sounds delish :)
The article says that women used to sell the cooked beans in Lisbon streets--from large dishes they carried on there heads..calling out 'Fava rica'!..but not heard of very much now!
Maybe Digger knows about this?
Dont know if its my imagination..but i dont think the almond tarts taste as good now as when I lived there near 11 years ago.Id love to have the recipe and have a go at one myself!
The chinese retsaurant in Lagoa--inpedestrian part..that was a nice place to have fish meals when we were there..used to do lovelydressed crab....can you recommend a really good fish eatery?
Good luck with the house renovations! :)

Favas

Post by biffa »

That restaurant was called A ONDA. It occupied the space that a Bank had before and is now the Chinese.

Any time now the first favas will appear. Try Favas Algarvia in O LOTUS, Lagoa. More or less the dish described by Ellie and Peter - very good indeed and served with a lettice and mint leaf (hortilã) salad.

That sounds good Biffa!
and I do like the 'mint'leaf /hortila& alface(lettuce) salad....definitely ill check out the 'favas Algarvia' at O LOTUS when next in Lagoa!
Oh and thanks for the name A ONDA..comes back to me now....they were nice guys in there....and let me use their phone quite a bit before ours was put on! :)
Incidently..the recipe I posted for 'favas a moda do Ribatejo' is from a lady called 'Edite Vieira' ...one of Portugals well known cookery writers..theyre doing special offer on one of her books...may get it..hopefully it may contain recipe for 'almond tart'..unless someone here comes up with one? :)
Has anyone been to the O'Casarao at Lagoa lately? Is the chicken piri piri as good as when we were resident? Not been in there for few years..used get really good take-away there..and not expensive!

Thanks for tip Galloping Gourmet!
I found one...all be it a Spanish one! (Oh ..have I said the dreaded word? )
Its made with puff pastry..but sounds very nice :)
Im glad to hear that Biffa...always enjoyed our meals there!
Im wondering if its still same family there?
I remember choosing some fish for my take-away..the lady was very nice & friendly....but didnt speak much English..she pointed at fish saying it was very good, she said 'Sofia, youll like that!"
So I had it and it was very good.
Told Maria..."Ive had 'sofia' for dinner!"
She kept saying it over & over..then laughed..' No Ellie! You mean swordfish!"
Was my face red

Hijack

Post by maddi »

Hi Ellie

Just popped in on a hijack mission (cos I know you don't mind), I am bored, nobody is in chat, not expecting visitors till much later, sat in a bath towel at pc and about to pour myself a large sundowner - could do with some lighthearted fun.

Ok got the large sundowner, still no sign of any lighthearted fun on here or anybody in chat  - now you all know what happens when I sit at the pc drinking alcohol on a friday night - I write even more rubbish than usual and spell it all wrong as well

yeah loads - and my guests still aren't here yet . . . some neighbours popped in for a swift jar or two on their way out this evening, but now 8.30pm, three sundowners (home measures) down the line and guests not expected 'til 9.15pm - I shall be uncontainable by then especially as there is still nobody in chat and all the repartit on here is on a serious or formal level :!:
