Lorry drivers are on strike due to the ever rising fuel prices. Last week it was the fishermen but it didn't really have the impact intended, this does

It may be a good idea to fill up with fuel as some petrol stations (in the Portimão area) have run out. Modelo in Lagoa has hardly any fish, no packed meat, veg is getting low AND the shelves are pretty bare

I haven't heard how long they're going to strike but if after one day there's a difference...

Well, if you don't want to worry us, don't tell us OK!. No fish! in the Algarve, no Veg, bare shelves, you'll be wanting UNESCO aid next

Hi B1D,
I didn't realise that the lorry drivers were on strike in Portugal? We saw the news last night about the Lorry drivers on strike in Spain.
Just goes to show how this sort of strike can bring a country to a standstill, specialy regarding the fuel?
There was one recently here, with cavalcade of Lorries driving into London..don't know what was affected apart from causing serious traffic jams.
But it is their living, so who can blame them?

Hubs just told me that Shell drivers are coming out on FRiday here, till next Tuesday.

not much fuel in Portimão and none in Lagoa (so I'm told) still some at Cepsa Carvoeiro, but not for long judging by the amount of cars.

Hi B1D..we saw on the news earlier that a Portuguese driver was killed is that right?

The lorry drivers are indeed resorting to drastic measures to enforce a standstill, there have been cases reported of vandalism and armed threats towards active drivers.

Active strike posts are being planned around all major cities to force a complete traffic standstill.

Some 15 fuel supply trucks were reported seen on the A15 with a police escort earlier today, but if normal fuel supply is not resumed by tomorrow, the transit authority estimates that the country will come to a complete standstill by friday.

I guess they knew we were coming. Hopefully the car hire company at the airport will be able to ensure a full tank or things could get amusing.

Normally we do a lot of travelling whilst on holiday, but my wife indicated she would like to have more "chill out time" this year. Well, looks like she might get her wish.

Clearly the Portuguese truck drivers are a force to be reckoned with. I hope those of you with a business in the area are not too badly hit.

same here, Gary and I are out on the 26th and we normally hire a car. Also it must have a knock on effect on Taxi drivers doing airport runs. It's starting to happen everywhere, even here in Holland we have had no busses for a week because of the bis driver strikes and it looks like going on and on. The ol'strikes are coming back which reminds me of the seventies having to put up with with lack of fuel. I remember my mother storing up on sugar and tinned food as well as stocking up with coal and candles as the miners were out of strike and the power being switched off all over Britain in the evenings and that was during the winter months....on that note better do some work

One trucker was killed as he tried to stop anothers truck by standing in his path.

Police are now under instruction to ensure that the truckers who do not wish to participate in the strike are able to pass through strike postions safely.

Everyone is keeping a close eye on negotiations, but as long as there is no consensus, the truckers seem intent on holding out as long as it takes.

Having checked back with some of our transfer drivers, I can confirm that there are currently no problems with the access to Faro airport, but this may change if the situation escalates to roadblocks around Faro.

At noon today, Sic Notícias has reported, that Lisbon Airport has run out of fuel for comercial airlines.
This has led to delays as medium and long haul flights need to make stops to refuel elsewhere. Operators were warned this could happen since monday and have contingencies in place to fuel the planes at the points of origin.

There have not been any cancellations due to fuel shortage yet and the ANA has reported that fuel supplies to Faro and Porto are sufficient.
