Our second robbery was while the car was parked along with a friends car at Algar Seco..whilst we all went to look at the caves thieves broke in and in the case of our friends car got the lot...house keys, credit card, passports, driving licences everything...we went IMMEDIATELY to the GNR who merely shrugged their shoulders and gave us a form (which of course we had to fill in and go back later and collect and pay for). Not the slightest interest was given or shown.

This is a country which was and is in some regards still a police state with the GNR, the PSP, the Maritime Police, the Transit Police, the fiscal police and do they still exist the dreaded PIDE!!!!So many Police forces - so little crime solved.

It is a disgrace when a friend of ours clipped a wing mirror in Silves and not realising it drove off.....the GNR of course tracked him down two months later...robberys not interested ...wing mirrors yes top of the agenda.

Andrew Neil on the BBC said an interesting thing the other day that there are more motorists in prison now in the uk than burglars...I am sure the same priority is given here..as we know how the GNR lurve to stand and catch vehicle owners....and what a nice little earner it is judging by the corruption trials of dozens of police now taking place in Albufeira.

A place can soon get a reputation for theft...then what would become of the tourist industry?

Martin, am I reading this correct, you left house keys, credit cards, passports and driver licences in an unattended car, locked our otherwise? Golly gee Martin, that's like giving a theft a licence to steal!

I'll go one better, a few years ago my wife and I were in Granada. While in a small shop, my wife had her wallet taken from her purse while it was on her shoulder. To insure a safe getaway the theft slashed one of her tires on our car as well. Little to say, that left us sadder but wiser

All in all I still think that Portugal is still a lot safer than the likes of Spain or some of the other European countries. If you want an eye opener to crime, spend some time here in the States, if you already have'nt. So not to offend lovable old Cowboy, I am not including Austin Texas in that last remark

Try this one re Police activity. Driving home to Cvo from Vilamoura and approached the traffic lights at Boliquieme which were green. Doing very sensible 50 kms or less speed. As I crossed lights I noticed they simply went out, black, nothing at all. Thought it was a power cut. Next set are only about 50 metres further on and they were also black so kept going with caution. Five metres from 'em they turned RED! Too late to stop so sailed on. Got stopped 100 metres up road and done Euros75 for failing to stop despite ptotests. Whilst being done a van thundered by at about 120 Kmph. Pointed out to Police that perhaps priorities may be a trifle wrong? Shrugs all round.

Turned out lights have no ORANGE phase at present so they go from Green to Red without any Orange warning. In fact they go GREEN; BLACK! then RED.

Police plotted up waiting! Nice one eh?

It happens everywhere,true story,wet tues night wed morning alarm goes off downstairs in the pub,by the time iget down thief gone,small window broken,half bottle of jack danials missing,rang cops,there in 2mins 3 of them,while making statment will ye have a drink lads?sure we,ll have a quick one,four small powers,now did ye get a look at this chap?no,will yis have another ,bird never flew on one wing,four more drops,quiet around the town these days,chance one for the road?ah sure go on.....................................three hours later listen gerry thanks but we better head ...we,ve to knock off in twenty mins.

statment ....£38.00 plus a hangover ye could photograph
i should have stayed in bed the thief was the cheapest part of the deal

no it wasnt us who lost the lot....friend..of course when it happens you feel so stupid...a five minute walk ends in disaster...one little trick Ive heard and this happened to a neighbour...while at that the pool someone nips in to the house and steals the keys....the visitors think where have we put them...then a few hours later or next day the keys "reappear" (after copies have been made of course). visitors think oh how stupid we are...must have misplaced them...anyway we found them now!!

the thief now of course has anytime access to the house throughout the season...no need to break in..just let themselves in...and then of course try and prove that someone broke in to the insurance or police.

A few years ago when I lived in Carvoeiro I was threatend with a fine for not having mudflaps in JUNE and it had not rained for 5 months.
Before the drink drive came into force a expat was stopped on the 125 for erratic driving, the gnr opened the door of the car and the man was so drunk he fell out, they fined him for not wearing a seat belt, and told to go straight home and not stop off anywhere else for a drink.
Many memories like this.

Considering that the GNR is getting worse and worse marks for dedication and sympathy I would like to add some food for thought:

A few decades ago Lagoa had a police chief who was renouned for his ruthelessness. If he caught a criminal, he would take him to the "state line" near Armação, beat the living c**p out of him and tell him that if he ever crossed the line into Lagoa again he would be after him like the devil after the poor soul.
Lagoa council was never safer.

Nowadays you would have civil rights groups screaming in dismay....right up to the point when every single member of that group has fallen victim to a crime of some sort, then they would probably shut up or even promote police brutality just to get a lid on the situation before it spirals out of control.

So who is ready to admit, that (s)he wouldnt mind bruising one or two of those thieving little gits rather than watching them get away with it again and again?
