Morning Dave!
About the ferry from Plymouth to Santander---our journey was in winter(Feb) and the weather was bad--Bay of Biscay was extremely 'rough'!!and everyone(and I mean everyone!) was seasick! The whole 24hour trip was like that! Ive never been so pleased to sea dry land in my life on reaching Spain-But-dont let my experience deter you--as you see--Kteee had a lovely trip.
The Southampton trip to Lisbon sounds good if its still running!
But have to say--I much prefer overland--stopping when you like--and as you say --seeing lovely countryside--love France--and Spain has an atmosphere --you sense its Moorish past and also its recent history of the 30s .
If you're driving at your leisure Dave--Im sure youll have wonderful trip. Dont know if we'll ever do it again

Have done Portsmouth to Bilbao and Plymouth to Santander this year and both crossings were pretty good. You will always take your chances with the Bay of Biscay depending on the time of year.
If you chose the longer ferry crossing over the drive through France, it is worth noting that there is much more to do and keep you entertained on the Portsmouth/Bilbao ferry (and the standard of that entertainment is superior!!).
We like the Plymouth ferry because Portsmouth is a nightmare to get to from S. Devon and Plymouth is only 30 mins away but Portsmouth could be the better option for you (and certainly is entertainment wise!!)

p.s. don't get me wrong, I love the Val de Loire and am doing a booze run on her next month but in all honesty the Pride of Bilbao is in a whole other class.

I am not sure of this year's timetables, but last year we did Portsmouth - Bilbao primarily becasue of the early morning arrvial in Bilbao - we were off the boat at about 8am and arrived in Carvoeiro at about 8.30pm - we had actually planned to take two days since we had a 3 year old and a 1 year old with us but the roads were so good it made sense to do it in one hit. Also much easier covering those sorts of miles in daylight.
The only down side is the return journey departs about 11am, but actually this works quite well in that you can set off the day before and drive as far as you want with little pressure - we got to Burgos which meant only a half hour drive in the morning to guarantee being on time.
Enjoy it whichever way you go
