Hi, as we intend relocating to the Algarve ,near Guia area, we were wondering if anyone could recomend a reliable removal firm. What are you views on using a Portuguese or British firm? any info would be gratefully received. thanking you in advance. by the way, what's the weather like there at the moment?!!
We re-located here in July 2006 and used Algarve Removals www.algarveremovals.com and found them reliable, helpful and competitively priced. I think that their depot here is actually around the Guia area. The weather here is changeable at the moment but it's still nicer than the UK !

Hi We used Algarve Removals too in Feb, the lads at this end where great, mind you we did feed them! No seriously, staff at both ends, great, Betina (in UK office) really helpful as is John the owner. Weve got to move the last lot of our stuff and are going to use them again at the end of May.

Gosh, cant remember the rate and I think I left the invoice at our villa - anyway, will check my paperwork here and see if I did bring it back and if not, I will speak to my Hubby (who is out there) and ask him. WIll get back to you.

Thanks guys for your help on removal firms, by the way has anyone heard of or used a firm called AIM Removals? if so, any feed back? Also, has anyone taken their cat to live in Portugal? I have a 15 year old cat and am concerned about transporting her over. Any animal lovers out there? thanks again!
katie we drove over using the chunnel with 2 dogs & a 17 year old cat, we had a great trip, really enjoyed it though the cat did catawaul through most of the first night & second day. We stayed the first night in a motel in Bordeaux & the second night in Salamanca (we were on the 3rd floor of the hotel, first time any of the animals had been in a lift) we could have driven farther but weren't sure where to stay. We crossed the border into the North of Portugal then used the new motorway down to the Algarve. Our cat will be 20 in September (God willing) & has absolutely thrived out here, seems to have given her a new lease of life, like a lot of the humans who move out here.

Thanks Blue for your reply to my concerns over bringing our cat with us to live in Portugal, it's helped a lot though I must admit I am wondering how you managed with the 'toileting' side of things on your journey down(if you know what I mean!) Our cat is already on medication for overactive thyroid and now suffering with arthritis/rheumatism so hopefully the warmer climate should help her too (just hope she makes the journey over). mind you the housing market is pretty slow here at the moment, it could be another year yet til we get there! Anyway, thanks again for your help.
moving pets
I am just in the middle of vets visits (and bills!) for our dogs passport! Hubby & daughter sailing to Santander very soon, dont know how Ted the dog is going to go on two nights in a kennel on board ship - hope hes not seasick! Mind you it is a damn site cheaper than flying a dog out, when we flew my daughters dog out - it cost her £580 plus the vets bills and passport,so £15 aint all that bad really is it. Good luck wit your cat! 
We considered the ferry but they don't have kenneling for cats & we were concerned about the possibility of it being a rough crossing. As far as toilet facilities for the cat we have a big 4x4 (I know, I know) when we stopped to give the dogs their break & exercise I would put the cat tray with liner & litter in the back, let the cat out of her box & then we'd leave her to it for a while. I have to say she never used it & waited every day until the evening when we would put her tray in the hotel bathroom, remarkable for a cat of her age, not an ideal set up but just for 2 nights it was not a big deal. Our cat would not run off she is quite dog like & sticks to her family like glue, if you have a nervous cat you need to be very careful when letting them out of their box & then opening car doors.
Suziebear I am very interested to hear how your ferry crossing goes, if we take the dogs back to the UK on a visit that is what we would like to do.

Thanks suziebear and blue for your good wishes and advice, all gratefully received! Do either of you know if the vet is still there on the N125 near the Guia roundabout and do you use them? If not, then can you recommend one, as they seem pretty thin on the ground! (mind you, my hubby says I should be more concerned with sorting out dr.s for us rather than a vet for the cat!) Thanks again.
