How do i find out where sewage pipes are :0)

Post by helsinkihelen »

Howdie!

I have been a member here for a couple of years, lurking away, but am now on the brink of purchasing and i was hoping for some advice.

We were wondering how we can find out where the municipal sewage pipes are laid as we will need to connect the property to the mains sewage system. We are getting a survey done on the house, but will not go ahead with the purchse if it is going to be prohibitively expensive, and were wondering if this info is easy to obtain ourselves, as it will save us going to the expense of the survey.

If anyone else has gone through the expereince of renovating a property and connecting to the sewers and would be willing to have a chat about it, i'd be ever so greatful.

Yours in anticipation :D

You could try the CAMRA office in Lagoa. If you ask to see the architect he has all the plans of the area including proposed & future developments. You may have to wait a while to see him but i think his advice is free.

Good luck.

I believe that the Camara maps show where sewers are laid. I obtained a copy of the one for my plot a few years back to evidence that my property was not connected to the main sewer and thus I should not be paying the drainage charge on my water bills.

If the property has a septic tank and there is no requirement to connect to the main sewer you might consider sticking with this. We never had any problem with our septic tank and it never required any maintenance. It also saved money by avoiding the sewerage charges.

A cesspit is a different matter and will certainly require period emptying.

Thanks for that.

We had thought about looking into a septic tank, but having spoken to a UK based surveyor friend, they said that it is recomended that STs are located at least 15 meters from the building. As the property has no land (just a patio area) we assumed that one would be out of the question.

I will try and ring/email the council and see if i can get through to someone.

Do you know of anyone who has connected to the sewerage system - how easy was it, and was it expensive????!!!!!
