Does anyone know if you can get local sim cards or pay as you go phones in the Algarve and if so how much are they.

Yes, you can buy sim cards. They start from around €5. Vodafone are good as you can use them out of the country too if you wanted.
There are phone shops all over the place now, including one in the Intermarche and at least 2 in Lagoa.

yes , you can buy uzo cards at the post office , when i got mine it was 2 for the price of 1 , 20 euros but you get 20 in credit , and calls are 30c a min.

you can buy the sim cards at the vodaphone shop at the airport - Faro
