House Insurance in Portugal

Could anyone inform me if it is advisable to include earthquake cover in your house insurance. Is Portugal a high risk from earthquakes? Thanks in advance.

Yes it is. Most useful in the event of a tremor causing a crack in the base of your swimming pool. Will cover the cost of drainage and repair.

There are fairly regular low level tremors, about 3 or so on the Richter Scale

The cost isnt prohibitive.

Ask what the excess for earthquake damage is. It may be 5 or 10% of the value insured which will preclude claims for many minor works

This time last year there was an earthquake of 5 point something and buildings in the area shook, rocks fell onto the beaches etc so yes to insurance for earthquakes

Don't forget that in 1755 most of S Portugal was flattened by earthquake. In geological terms this is like yesterday.

You can also guage the risk by asking for a quote with and without earthquake insurance. When we used a portuguese company it made a big difference. We are now insured with Intasure based in the UK and they include earthquake protection automatically.

We also insure in the UK with "Insurance for Homes Abroad", and they include earthquake insurance for Portugal. We saved nearly half of what we were paying Allianz for the same cover.

I tried them on your recommendation, but their first quote is a lot higher than that which I'm paying locally. However, still need to compare the fine print to check that I'm comparing similar cover.
