Sweet, sweet dog needs a home urgently

What is it with the portuguese and stray dogs,they don't seem to be very animal freindly at all ,it really lets the country down,mother was very upset this year with the amount of strays down in ferrugudo ,not nice to see.

When I lived in the Algarve and was at school there I remember seeing very many stray dogs around in fact you would often see or hear of packs of dogs that became a nuisance and frightening to people and I do remember that a dead dog on the road then was quite the norm.
Thought it would have improved by now but it seems that it has not.Dont like the way the Portuguese tie their dogs up on short leads either thats cruel.
Hope the young dog here finds a good home.

I hate to hear of stories like this and wish we could give her a loving home but we are not there enough. However I have printed off her picture and posted a few notices here in the restaurant, so fingers crossed between us all we can find her the home she deserves.

Jose A, Dust Devil - Animal cruelty is a problem wherever you are in the world, and it certainly is not nice to see. However, it is not a 'Portuguese' problem. Indeed, we Brits even invented an organisation to prevent cruelty the problem was so bad in good old blighty. It even has Royal patronage and today is dealing with more cases than ever. I don’t believe that you have never seen stray dogs in the UK. I bet the TV ads have started already, 'a dog is for life, not just for Christmas' - Ring any bells?, ho ho ho .

The animal situation here in Portugal has problems of course but it is much improved to how it was when we first came here many years ago. There are lots of people of all nationalities including many Portuguese, doing wonderful work neutering, rehoming and caring for cats, dogs donkeys etc. It is a problem everywhere including the UK - my daughter works with one of the animal rescue charities in England.
I do hope you can find a home for the puppy Globetrotter she looks adorable.

Ma Ja, that is terrific. Thank you! I agree that this is not just a Portuguese problem and many, many portuguese people are very responsible dog owners. From what I understand, the situation today is much better than it was 10 years ago.

I believe from what i have seen the stray dog problem is far worse in the algarve than it is in england.We do have an animal cruelty organisation in britain and one wouldn,t go a miss in portugal ,not only do they have a problem with strays ,dog mess is also a major problem that i have witnessed especially around silves castle,when was the last time you saw a dog waste bin in portugal?,Im afraid any problem we have in blighty with stray animals doesn't compare with portugal,they are certainly premier league.good day.

JoseA, I know that there are Portuguese folk involved in animal issues in Algarve. I did speak to one at the animal charity shop in Lagoa,started by Nan Richardson I believe who started the Donkey sanctuary.
I also know Linda who works there and they do care about stray dogs. I was with Linda one day when she was trying to round up one little dog.

I may be wrong but I think they're mostly run on a voluntary basis,with Expats & other nationalities involved.But I don't know if theres anything like our RSPCA

When we lived there in the early 90s, the dog situation was awful and seeing dead dogs in the road was commonplace and would often see a pack of dogs wandering around Carvoeiro, on the beach or in Lagoa.
You still see the odd one but it seems a lot better these days.

Hi Julie,
Not yet. I did have her vaccinated though. I am also training her. She really is a delight. If I didn´t have two, I would keep her in a heartbeat. I have been taking her walking on the cliffs and she is so tractable, unlike my crazy aussie. She is also showing signs of being a bit protective but not aggressive (which I like!)

Brambles is going to make a great companion for someone. The vet gave her a clean bill of health and thought she was quite sweet. Also, he told me that she is a portuguese hunting dog (or perdigueiro).

Interested??

If i lived in Carvoeiro i am sure that i would be interested even though i am more a cat person. Hope you have luck finding a home for the delightful pup and that her mother is ok.

Surely someone out there must want to give Brambles a home.

Brambles is still looking for a home everyone. She has been to the vet and now has her first round of vaccinations. He gave her a clean bill of health and was quite admiring! She remains sweet but is gaining confidence around other dogs. She is also learning her manners quite quickly and is very observant of my other well trained dog. Her activitiy level is moderate. In other words, she loves a good play with other dogs and is learning to fetch, but she is also quite content to lay around in the sun. I don´t think she is going to be a dog that will be happy to run 15 k with you, but she loves her long ambles. My aussie was much higher maintenance at the same age.

So, just an update for any interested parties.

We live permanently here in deepest darkest Dorset on the farm so we are unable to assist, however if we were to be living in CVO we would help.
What about a number of you joining up to home her. Amongst all those that come out to their villas/apts at all the odd times, perhaps she could stay with each of you in turn, an idea!!! We could all collectively deal with the costs

Brambles has been adopted!!! By a local business man. I would love to say his business so that you all could go support it, but I forgot to ask permission!

She now has acreage to run on and hopefully, will have another buddy to play with soon.

Many, many thanks to the kind gentleman who saved her (and my marriage)!
