What a View!

A poll in this weeks Mirror stated that the "Buttertubs Pass" in the Yorkshire Dales was voted no.1 for most beautiful view in the UK.This was followed by others near Penrith in Cumbria--Scotland and Wales.
I can vouch for the no 1 -as a regular visitor & walker to the Dales,it truly is magnificent. Ive also lived in the Lake District so ditto for that in Penrith.
What favourite "view" do you have?
I happen to think that Portugal can compete with anywhere --not just for its wonderful coastline but tour North of the country and see how green it is compared to the South.
Ive only ever travelled in Western Europe so I expect many of you will have your own favourites from around the globe?
Another place we came upon "by accident" (and it nearly was!) was the "Massife Central" in France--it was dark and we were lost,so pulled over to road side to camp.
What a wonderful but slightly terrifying "view" we awoke to the next morning! for ,there before us, and barely a foot from our camper,was this beautiful,awesome miniature "Grand Canyon"! Absolutely breathtaking!
have you ever "stumbled" across a similar view?
Would love to know--and what is your favourite view--- apart fromlooking out to sea from CVOs little bay of course! Ellie

My favourite view is standing on the small pier at Fionnphort on the Isle of Mull in the Hebrides waiting for the ferry and looking across to the magical Isle of Iona . My most hated view is looking at Iona when I'm coming away from it on the ferry!

Sounds like you love that Isle of Iona Helen--somewhere Ive never been- the Hebrides --but you make it sound quite beautiful.

Caramujeira, is east of CVO, just off the road that runs between Benagil and Lombos through to the EN125. Dave.

Thanks for info Dave--I know Benagil but didnt know Caramujeira ! and I should have known of it considering the length of time I lived inAlgarve! But strangely it doesnt ring any bells!

You're right Elle, Iona really is a beautiful place. It is only 3 miles long by 1.5 miles across with no cars allowed, unless of course you live there. It has a special atmosphere - very calm and you really feel at peace. There are also many small beaches with brilliant white sands and crystal clear sea and if there is another person on the beach you think it's crowded! I used to go there for my holidays as a child and I've never grown out of it and I wouldn't want to. If you are ever lucky enought to get the chance to visit I am sure you would love it.

Helen-- Iona sounds wonderful --the way you describe it makes one want to be there--and idyllic in childhood--sounds perfect place for a "retreat" too --as you say, very calming influence. As i say, I dont know anything about it. Does it have much of a population?
By the way, sorry I didnt realise you were in Algarve-- caramajeiro--probably spelt that wrong -- know Benagil --mind you its been awhile since I lived in Lagoa and I have forgotten some place names --or maybe my brains going rusty!

Loch Tummell in Perthshire takes a lot of beating.

Can you guide me with this one Sandy-Ive had map out and spotted LochRannock and Loch Tay -am I looking in right place for Loch Tummel?
My late mother loved Scotland and thought there was nowhere like it for beautiful views--her favourite spot was Loch Lomond.
My sons driven up there several times from London to Inverness. Afraid the only visit I made a few years ago was up through Northumberland Nat.Park; it took ages and I only got as far as Jedburgh!
Son told me I should have gone via A66 -then motorway up to Carlisle and Scotlands West coast.

Loch Tummell is a few miles northwest of Pitlochry. The whole area is beautiful and wonderful for walking.

Sounds wonderful place Sandy--Ill definitely have to make plans to explore there some time--walking is my favourite thing --next to gardening & piano----- wonder if you ever get back there much? Is it an area you "hail" from?

If we have to discount anywhere near CVO, my favourite view in the UK has to be from the front of Selworthy church in Somerset over a stunning valley, English countryside at its best. Not a very well known tourist site, most people blast past the turn off en route between Minehead and Lynton and Lynmouth (beautiful too!) but it also has a delightful little collection of thatched cottages and tea rooms doing yummy cream teas. I always take my overseas visitors there and they always love it and are speechless at the beauty of the views

Overseas, well I climbed Mount Bromo in Java once, when I was younger and fitter, to see sunrise. The view was awesome, although I consider myself well travelled I don't think I've seen anything since to rival that - pity it is off so many people's 'must visit' list due to terrorist concerns. Thank heavens we haven't seen such problems in our favourite corner of the Algarve.

Hi Ellie - yes I am a Scot and as sentimental as any other about the wonderful countryside there. I still go back from time to time and try to take a few days to holiday with my family there.

G e S, I recently learnt that Muscat was captured by the Portuguese in 1507. But, do you happen to know, how long they "stayed"? Is there any evidence of their presence there now? (bacalhau on the supermarket selves, that kind of thing?)
