Executive invest 196 million in aerial means of combating fires
The Government has decided to authorise the release of expenses for acquisition and location of aerial means specifically intended for the prevention and combat of forest fires, as well as the acquisition of provision of aerial services for the same purpose. The measure includes a combination of four heavy aeroplanes, six medium and four light helicopters (up to an amount of 178 million euros); the provision of service of 16 light and four medium helicopters and 14 medium and light planes, with a maximum duration of five years (with a cost of 18 million euros).
In an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers which took place in the Tapada de Mafra, the executive also analysed the Final Report of the National Authority for Forest Fires relative to the activity developed, to the evaluation of the national prevention, detection, alert and fire fighting system and to the changes to adopt in the procedures and the organic structures involved.
The Council of Ministers further approved a combination of charters to respond to the inefficiencies and needs detected in the national civil protection system and in the prevention, detection, alert and fire fighting, in the prevention and attenuation of the collective risks inherent in accident or catastrophical situations, as well as in rescue and assistance of people and the protection of cultural or environmental assets and valuables of high public interest.
The objective, according to the Government, is to achieve "a new attitude in Civil Protection; a greater vigilance, a higher operational capacity and a true unity in the planning, direction and command".
