We have just bought a new build T2 apartment in Carvoeiro and were going to let it out to friends & family initially for a nominal sum. Can anyone give me an idea of how much it costs per week approx to use the airconditioning say in peak season and to heat it (gas central heating) say in Jan/Feb. We weren't intending to charge a rent but would like our costs covered but as we haven't even used it ourselves yet its hard to know how much to charge until the bills arrive. I know some villa/apartment owners charge extra if airconditioning provided in summer so even if someone can let me know what they charge that would be great just to give us a rough idea.
Looking forward to many more visits to lovely Carvoeiro now that we have our own place and now we have a cheap(ish) flight available from Scotland! (although reading this site its still not anywhere as cheap as down south) Coming back out again in 4wks 5 days not that i'm counting or anything. Can't wait!!

Part depends on the size of the system.
The conversion for btu/h to kW/h is multiply by 0.293/1000
ie 15,000 btu/h = 4.395 kW/h
You need to look at a bill for how much your paying but say approx 7uk pence and run for 8 hours will cost £2.50 (3euro).

This is only rough guide but i'm sure someone can give you an idea as to markup/actual cost

A simple solution when if it is only family and friends is to wait until you get the bill and charge them for what was used whilst they were there. Ask them to read meters on arrival and departure. Personally we ignore the standing charges since we would have to pay them anyway.

For info Electricity €0.096 per kwh and a typical air con unit has a rating of 1.5 to 2Kw. Standing charge depends on your "potencia contratada" but €23 per month for 13.4kva. Telephone line rental €12 per month. Water depends on supplier but below €1 per cubic metre

Thanks for the replies. I will probably do as you suggested Aardvark and get meter readings taken and keep an eye on it. It was really only in case costs were unexpectedly high if running air conditioning in high season, not really bothered about 'normal' running costs as such .
Anyway just back from Carvoeiro and once again had a great time. Can't wait to go again in the New Year.

Unable to help with utility costs but my wife and I travel from Scotland and we agree that the definition of "cheap flights" is relative!

We are returning in February to with a view to progressing our relocation dreams. Whilst we normally drive to Manchester from Fife and travel via Monarch Scheduled this did not appeal for a winter trip. We have secured flights with British Airways from Edinburgh via Gatwick for about £75 each but plus £50 in taxes!

Hi Mike ,

Agree flights are still a problem with Scotland. We have been using Globespan for short breaks during the summer . Basic but reasonably cheap but they don't run in winter so am doing same as you and looking to fly to london and onwards to Faro for our break in January.
Incidentally I dont know if you saw that Globespan were putting their summer flights (April onwards) on sale from yesterday but system couldn't cope with demand and crashed!! Aparently they will now be flying daily to Faro from Glasgow but think it is only twice a week from Edinburgh. I intend booking up for easter break as soon as back online as it does make a difference to journey time for us when we can go from a local airport . (We live only 5 mins from Glasgow airport)

Just a thought, don't know if it would be any good, but what about flying esyjet from Scotland to Bristol or other airport and then on to Faro with same airline? Any cheaper?

Hi Lesley,

Connections to some of the other airports can be a problem. A lot of the time you'll find you either have a wait of several (5 or 6 ) hours before connecting flight to faro departs, not good with two children, or you miss it completely. I know what you mean though it is worth looking about for best options and prices . In Scotland we don't have a lot of choice out of season so we do have to look at other airports however Thomas Cook had a flight (charter) from Glasgow leaving 26th Dec (1 week earlier than planned) but the price was £1700 for 4 for 1 week.

Not sure if this will apply to holidays from Scotland.

When we were looking at flights earlier in the year it was cheaper for us to by a cheap package holiday than buy flights only! We did not stay in the accomodation. You may get something from Manchester

You have probably already looked at of this option, but thought I would just mention it. I just searched the internet, cannot remember who we booked with probably, we just lucky.

Just a thought but would connection to any of the irish airports help ..ryanair tend to do great offers twixt uk and here

didn't think about the package deal option. Thats a good idea as you do see some cheap packages advertised and you never know there might be something available to suit from manchester /eastmidlands etc.
