100ml bottle warning at Faro Airport

Last night we placed our baggage and liquids on the belt at Faro security to be informed they were going to throw away our 100ml plastic bottle with liquid in it. I purchased 10 of them when the liquid law came in. So far this year we have now travelled back home via Faro 5 times. We had to stand our ground with this woman and her friend when she claimed it could have been any capacity as there was nothing on the bottle. We were both furious. I even showed her 3 empty bottles but still she would not have it. Eventually standing our ground and insisting she hand it back and we wanted to speak to her supervisor worked. This is a warning to those travelling back who may also get this jobs worth. I wonder if I had put a sticky label on and written 100mls that would have been ok. has anyone else had this problem at Faro?

Hi Licy, Possibly the same lady. We have a son who loves those little sardine pates you get in 4 packs in Portugal. Two years ago at the airport I was returning home, on my own, no liquids at all so I had no plastic bag. A lady on the security desk insisted that those sardine pates were liquid and had to be placed in a plastic bag. I pointed out that I had travelled throught the airport on numberous occasions in the past few years and nobody else had remarked on these items or stated they were liquids. She called over to the other desk for confirmation that she was right but they guy there just shrugged and said something to her in Portuguese. Anyway she insisted that go back to the shop in the airport and purchase a plastic bag. I did this but the bag was too small to fit in the 4 packs without emptying them and even then they didn't all fit. When I was going back through security the other guy called me over and just looked at the plastic bag full (not closed as not all the tubs with fit in the bag) of little tubs of pate but said nothing and pushed them through. Have passed through Faro many times since and now I just lift out the packs (usually 3/4)and place them in the tray - no plastic bag -and nobody has passed any comment.

I bring back about 24 packs of the little pks of 4 mixed pate's which I purchase in the supermarket at 89c a pk of four and wrap them in a plastic bag and put in the suitcase amongst the oranges/lemons/almonds we pick, usually 6 bottles wine and 4 bottles of port, all squished amongst shoes and clothes. Never had a problem bringing it thru customs.

But that's the difference between checked-in hold luggage and carry-on cabin baggage.

You could fill the entire hold case with liquids, but not cabin baggage. You can have the equivalent of up to 500mls in the plastic bags, ie 5 x 100ml bottles per person. Lots of people get caught out with part filled/used bottles over 100mls in size which are always confiscated.

I did realise the difference, just suggesting perhaps do a luggage trip.

My husband has a bottle of used brake fluid and was wondering how to dispose of it. One idea was to take it to the airport next time, they would confiscate it - job done. He's still not forgiven them for confiscating his golf balls.

That's classic Sam. You could also fill a whisky bottle with urine. Someone might drink it

I've started to carry an empty 100ml bottle along with the filled 100ml bottles as I find the labels on the filled bottles quickly come off. Do so in anticipation of the problems highlighted earlier in the hope that security can compare bottles and accept all 100ml.................or am I being naive????

When I take liquids it is maybe 100mls of vodka on the way back so luggage in the hold does not work and is too expensive.
