income tax in Europe
income tax in Europe
I've been reading a really interesting report which details gross & net income levels across Europe, the real overall rates of income tax, disposable income & 'liberation day' details, i.e. the date at which your money becomes yours rather than grabbed by the government in country to country.
some of the details are really interesting; if you open the 2013 link a couple of pages down in the link below & then go to page 9 the last 2 columns make very interesting reading. In terms of most of our interest, in the UK the working man is left with €29,768 after taxes & is liberated on the 13th of May, whilst in Portugal the working man is left with €12,580 and doesn't get liberated until the 4th of June; which is much better than the poor Belgians who don't get liberated until the 8th of August!!
this is not to needle but merely to think about; Portuguese people are being asked to pay €25,500 for a Golf 1.4 Tdi, 200% of net salary, UK people are being asked for €19,000, what's that? 60% of net salary? no need to ponder too long about sales figures.
For the economies to be equal the cost of living in Portugal needs to be 1 1/2 times cheaper than the UK, and it isn't by a long chalk, little wonder the economy is in dire trouble.
