Hi Guys

We are coming out on 7th August for a couple of weeks ( as we do most Summers) !! Our eldest son Alex has recently had problems with his ears following Grommitts being inserted. He is doing good at the mo, but I know that after a few days of diving into the pool and sea I will probably be dealing with an ear infection So ...... can anyone out there tell me if it's possible to buy antibiotics over the counter from the Chemist ? Did think of asking our GP so had some with us, but I know the answer will be 'no'

If you have a repeat prescription form you can go to a chemist and get more, but if you haven't then you may need to go to one of the many doctors in CVO and get one. Remember it will cost about 50 euros for a doctors visit.

It must be 5 years ago so things could have changed but I had a chest infection and the pharmacist referred me to the
Doctor who prescribed antibiotics, at a cost.
My GP would give me a course of AB's to take with me just in case - especially if I had trouble before I left, you could
always ask him.

Just go to Lagoa Medical center ( Centro de saude de Lagoa) with your E111 and 2.60€uros and you can see a doctor who will wright you out a prescription if you need one and you can get what you need from the chemist at the discounted rate !!!!
Antibiotics are not sold over the counter without a prescription.

But more seriously, the E111 was replaced by a new EHIC - European Health Insurance Card in 2006. I guess its still possible that the old E111 is still recognised in Portugal though ?

My granddaughter went to the Centro de Saude last month with her EHIC and saw a doctor to geta prescription for antibiotics for an ear infection. She got the reduction at the Chemist and the overall cost was low - certainly cheaper than a prescription in the UK. A few years ago you could get all sorts of medicine without prescription but things have tightened up now.

My only word of warning is that the doctors here seldom ask you are alergic to any drugs and more worryingly never seem to enquire whether you are taking any other drugs before writing the prescription.

my better half suffers from migraines. in ireland she requires a prescription for really strong tablets, but when we produced the tablet 'box' in tavira two years ago the chemist was able to give her (a much better) alternative, no prescription required. cost in ireland of frovex tables around €50 for 4, cost of zomig in portugal around €27 for 6. and she has been informed by chemist that if she does produce a prescription the price goes down by €10, and that the cost of the doctor should be around €2. didn't know how this worked until now. thanks for that.
