Moving from UK and making holiday villa permanent home
Moving from UK and making holiday villa permanent home
I would be so grateful for any advice as to what is necessary to move out to live in our holiday villa until it is sold..
My husband just lost his job so we are having to rent the UK property to susidise income (all above board) and move out to our villa as our home. We cannot complain as we are fortunate to have a second home but it all seems a little frightening.
Can we bring our own car from UK for one year?
What do we have to do legally? ie Do we have to declare the rental we are getting from our property in the UK which is subsidising our living expenses in Carvoiero?
Any help from you experienced folk would be so so welcome. I am posting a separate topic as we are commited to rentals on our own villa for June - August so we will also have to move out of villa and rent somewhere for ourselves during that time!!
Thanks so much

Legally you can only keep your UK reg car here for 6 months, it then has to leave Portugal.
If your intention is to make Portugal your permanent home you can " matriculate , change to PT registration ".
This can be a long involved and expensive process if it is not done properly.
If you remain a UK tax payer then you deal with the inland revenue but again you are oblidged to complete a Portuguese tax return in Portugal as this will be your home.
It is better to take professional advice

Gabby I'm sure we all sympathise with your position and it may not be that unusual in the future. I can imagine that the whole process is quite daunting but on the bright side there are many people who will envy your living in the Algarve for a while.
I believe that the rental on your home will be taxable in the UK but of course you can deduct your expenses which should include your mortgage interest.
As EMM says you are only allowed to keep a UK car in Portugal for 6 months but maybe you could use your period of summer rentals in the villa to take the car out of Portugal and then start another 6 month period when you return.
Hopefully you will only have a year and in that time I cannot imagine you will have much trouble. Good luck.

Hi
About the car. You can only keep it in Portugal for 6 months in any 12 months so do not risk anything else or you may find your insurance invalid and in the case of an accident involving serious injury to another person the resulting medical costs could bankrupt you!!!!
Others will say just risk it but don't.
