illegal baby names

Post by martin »

what a surprise!!!it seems to give a baby here in portugal a wrong name is illegal ..but govt approved names can be given however. Just wonder if all the forum names are legal??

report from yahoo as follows

"Ovnis (Portugal)
Before naming your child in Portugal, best consult this mammoth, 80-page government doc (and have it translated to English) that tells you which names you can and can't use. It's pretty strict (and random) – Tomás is OK but Tom isn't – and celebs can forget about the likes of Apple and Brooklyn, which aren't even on the banned list. Essex girls rejoice, however – Mercedes is allowed!

Has Portugal banned any other names? There are more than 2,000 names on the reject list, including Ovnis - Portuguese for UFO."

The list only now applies to Portuguese nationals, if you have foreign passport you can give the baby whatever name you like. The only restriction that still applies is that you can only give 2 first names and 4 last names. if you want 3 first and 1 last you have to produce a certificate from your embassy, The British embassy charge around 80 Euros (from memory). Did this last year for my son.
