It has been suggested to me that I buy a free sat dish and TV in UK to install in CVO. Can anyone tell me whether this is a good idea, please.

I have two builder friends who are coming over in January who will bring the kit with them and do the necessary physical stuff

Yes if the dish is big enough , if UK size you will receive very little if anything. in Pt 1.5/2mtrs dia is needed.

Another thought. 1.5m is a big dish. Are there any e.g planning rules or regulations I have to observe. I am grateful for your assistance so for and if I am pestering you for info, please tell me "go away"

Hope there are no planning rules as thousands of us have them.

One thing if you are in an apartment block , condominium or holiday complex there could be , rules which could prohibit individual owners putting up their own dishes.

I have a villa on a large plot - so that's it then. A dish, an iDTV or digibox and I have free UK TV in Portugal. Sounds too good to be true. Thanks for your info

You will need a sensitive LNB to get the best reception here. The LNB does make a difference as some of the signal strengths have reduced over the years. If you buy in the UK check that it is suitable for a large dish.

Geoff, do you intend to rent your villa ? If so you might be better off getting a local installer who might cost a few extra euro to set up the system but who will turn up to fix it when it's broke.

Had mine installed by RJtechnika - 1.35 m dish + freesat box - €425 installed - excellent reception

Macassa - Can you get Sky from them and if so how do you get the card to work there and here(UK)?

You don't need a skycard to get the free uk channels in Portugal, you just need an old sky box, that still works. We have a fantastic guy who does our satelite systems whenever we move, which is quite alot!. I think he charged us €200 last time for the dish and installation. Send me a pm if you would like his details.

But if you want to watch the Sky channels ( and those linked to SKY ) the NEW SILVER SKY cards will not work in a second box, only in the one it was originally registered to.

This is a pain for those of us who subscribe to SKY in the UK and would like to watch our favourite channels when in Portugal.

Freesat channles are fine except they can drop off without warning.

We are moving lock,stock and barrel to Carvoeiro in the Summer and have a full Sky set up here - from what I've read on here recently we will probably need a larger dish (1.5M) but if we bring our Sky+ box and all the gubbins - it should be service as normal - is that right?

If you bring your existing UK box and card, should not have any problems as many of our contacts have done just that.
But you have to retain a UK billing address for SKY otherwise they will cut you off as it is " illegal " to receive SKY outside of the UK ( in theory ).
