Importing new vehicles and spanish visas!!
Importing new vehicles and spanish visas!!
Hi everone,
I have 2 totally separate questions that hopefully somebody can help me with.
1 - My mum and dad who live in Carvoeiro are wanting to buy a new Nissan from the dealers in Portimao. The cost is euro 35.000.
These vehicles cost 18000 pounds in UK. Has anybody experience of companies who will buy and export a UK car over obviously saving mum and dad a bit of money?
2- I am visiting mum and day for a fortnight in July during which I shall be driving into Spain once or twice. I have authority from the car hire firm to do this and no extra charge is being applied.
My mum says I now need a euro 50 'visa' to drive into Spain. Is she getting confused with car hire extra charges for Spain or is there a new 'visa' or similair that you now need?
Thanks
Steve

As far as I am aware most of the local Portuguese rental companies do charge extra for driving over into Spain and I have seen this figure of euro 50 mentioned. We normally hire from Avis who do not charge for this as, I am told, they are international and have depots in southern Spain. Whether the other internationals such as Europcar, Sixt etc. make a charge I do not know but it is worth checking before hiring as the consequences of an accident or breakdown in Spain could be quite costly if, under the strict terms of the rental agreement, you are not supposed to be there.
I have always been under the impression that an additional charge applies to take the hire car out of country. I choose to use Auto Jardim for my own reasons . On the back of their hire sheet it says :- Prices do not include leaving the country.AJ will allow the exit to Spain through te payment of an extra tax that will be mentioned on the rental. In case the client takes the car out of the Country without permission or payment, will pay the amount of €3,00 per each covered kilometer during the rental period and will be responsible for all damages that may occur to the rental car. .. So I guess if push comes to shove and you do 500K in Pt and 50 in Sp you become liable for a surcharge of the total K, ie: €495.. Be worth checking out, other companies may vary.
