Do I need a rep too?

Hi There, I will be renting apartments from week to week until I find somewhere more permanent.
I move to the Algarve on 8th April 2008 with my 7 year old son. At present in the UK I am self employed and my tax code reflects this as I currently have to pay no tax due to a low income. I have no intension to buy a property just rent. Do I need a fiscal number to get my son into a school? What do I need to take to the tax office? I am desperate to get my child into a local school and would not want problems with a fiscal number to deter this. As I will be renting on a week to week basis, different apartments in the same area, what could i use as my address? I am quite worried as time is running out!

Put crudely Debbie, I think you need a fiscal number to exist in Portugal. Certainly if, down the line you wanted to buy a place of your own.

Don't know for sure about the fiscal number but you will need all the records of your son's jabs before he will be admitted in a local school, please correct me if this is wrong but this is what a friend had to do before they would accept her daughter.

You need more than jsut a fiscal number to get your child in the local school, you will need residency and you will need to show you have the vaccinations, which will require registering at the centro de saude. I think you may also need to register at the social security office to get the cartao de utente for the centro de saude. Nothing here is ever easy!

You could get an "apartado" a post box in either Carvoeiro or Lagoa post office and keep it as your permanent address...

Thank you so much for all of your responses to my queries. I have my sons up to date jabs from my doctors surgery on letter headed paper so thats a relief. I also have the official end of school report which mark his progress so far. I will be looking into getting a postal address/mailbox as this is the best way to go due to us moving around.
When I arrive, I will get the rest of the paperwork sorted out as soon as possible. Its mind boggling and with 4 days to go I am more than nervous...
