Riding a moped

Post by mrsnippy »

I have noticed there is a 50cc moped for sale on this site and it got me interested.
Does anyone know roughly how much a moped costs to insure, run, tax etc and can you drive them on a standard car driving licence.
Do you have to wear a helmet in portugal?
Can you take 50cc on N125 road?
They seem a cheap alternative to a car as we only will have one car and my partner needs it for work and we cant afford two cars.
Any advise appriciated.

Hi mrsnippy,

Mopeds are a great way to get around locally here.

You can drive with your standard car licence, very cheap to run, insurance approx 90 euros, theft cover not available, no road tax. not allowed on motorways, you have to wear a helmet (you would be crazy not to), no problem parking.

One slight disadvantage is, you tend to walk even less than when using a car.

Regards,

Frank

They are ok on the N-125 though. You might need to pedal up some of the hills in cvo.

I had a 50cc Honda once and I loved it.

Drove it almost every day.
Always started.
Always got me home.

Fantastic gas (petrol) mileage.

I had it for several years and the only engine maintenance I had to do was change the oil, spark plug and clean the oil filter. (usually every 3-4 months)

Top speed was about 45 MPH.
