We instinctively duck as the Tornado jet skims our rooftop once more;as I lookover the back field the plane seems at treetop level;I swear I see the pilot. This is not unusual experience;herein beautiful"peaceful"Lincolnshire Wolds we live with this 5 days out of 7 & with impending war with Iraq it has increased especially at nighttime when occassionally we hear distant "bombing practise",on a dummy ship off coast at Skegness! I tremble at the sound & feel the real fear of maybe thousands of innocents who may soon experience the"real thing". BBC news has announced the deportment of upto 100RAFTornado GR4 &Harrier GR7 ground attack jets to the Gulf -yet- over 80% of this nation is totally against war. We are ignored by Blair&co as Bush ignores UN & world opinion and we stand helpless as they tumble us towards possible Armegeddon. North Korea threatens to attack US troops if another ship is sent to area(with possible Nuclear weapons). As Def.Sec Hoon hands over early warning system at Fylingdales(Yorks),we seem nothing more than battleship "US UK"!.
I sit here full of fears -fear of retaliation when the first bombs fall, with London a main target for terrorists - fear for my young daughter &her small children who live there.
I fear we stand on the brink and I am afraid to see over the edge.We are all in this together - pray hard for peace.

It is out of our hands and history repeats itself. Only this time it can all end with the push of a button...

Yes indeed, Cowboy,
Although Im not old enough to know of 1939, my parents were young then and living in London and much later,theyd relate to me the terrible fear of the dreaded bombings which started more or less right away when war was declared that September-six long years it went on-the last year more dreadful,with our part of London flattened,relatives killed-my very young mum&dad along withbabies(me&brother)had to live in a school(one set of bunkbeds to each family)for a year. They were so grateful to have America on their side,&we dont forget the sacrifices they made to help us -Ive visited their graves inNormandy.God rest them.
How about the marches today? well over a million in London(maybe nearly 2) my family were involved-Thousands in New York & other capitals.
We need an outbreak of peace dont you think?Surely between our nations we can contain Sadam without bombing thousands of innocents. It doesnt become us,there must be a better way.

no, it doesn't become us...i think we are living in a time that will set the tone for all that will come after...ww1 comes to mind....and i wish we had done better...but we haven't.."know my son with how little wisdom the world is run." if the protesters can turn mr. biair around, then there might be a chance ...and i doubt that will happen....public protest only works in the long run. the"bottom line" is that if bush wants this war, i don't doubt that he will get it. i truly feel for you, but at this point, gambrinus's advice is about the best there is.

I'm inclined to agree, there is enough depressing news in the papers and on TV, I come on to this site for some light relief and reminders of happy times spent in Carvoeiro, it takes your mind off of the doom and gloom for a few minutes!

I love Carvoeiro -its my second home - but even lovely Carvoeiro cant be cuckoo land - we live in a global village - remember John Donne ?"No man is an island" ?
But never mind eh? Lets just have one big foam party get stoned & dont give a hoot !! Thats the answer isnt it ?? No one gives a damn anyway do they?

I would like to say that I have had many a good time in the Algarve, especially Carvoeiro, and I am all in favour of other people enjoying themselves. I find the current political situation surrounding Iraq very disturbing, and yes, very gloomy, but what I also find equally disturbing is when people wantonly bury their heads in the sand (or perhaps I should say foam, a more appropriate substance for this age!) Nowhere is immune from the threat of war on this scale, nor the terrible consequences that could come from such a conflagration, not even Carvoeiro! But I am no pessimist either. If millions of people care enough, and demand to be listened to, and continue to do so, I believe that war could be averted, and that the forces of intelligence and common sense could prevail. It is great to see European leaders and the UN standing up for a more patient and considered approach to this problem. Because the force that worries me most in the world today is America, particularly that moron George W . Bush. America seems to think it can do whatever it pleases, regardless of what the rest of the world thinks, and unfortunately, it can. America worries me far more than Iraq or North Korea ever could. Especially with someone at its helm like Bush, a man who sometimes took a matter of minutes to decide that a man should go to the electric chair, when he was Governor of Texas. I would dearly love to see my country dissociate itself completely from America and American imperialism. Unfortunately, Blair seems determined to take Britain and British troops into this chaos, and if they do go to war against Iraq, I will be filled with shame. Blair is only doing this to save his own selfish skin. There is no clear evidence that Iraq is in breach of any UN resolution, but if it is, so is Israel, and we don't see the Israelis being starved, and surrounded by powerful, hostile forces. Let us hope that war will not occur, and that more innocent Iraqis will not be put to the sword, because only one Iraqi is guilty, and he has been offered a cushy exile by the wonderful Allied forces. Wake up to the wider world, Carvoeiro!

i think kteee gets the point..let's not get into a "web war"..let's address neil's comment on "american imperlisim"...(1) can you name any major country wasn't or tried to be? including your own? (2) and, as far as europe goes, the u.s. tried to stay out of your wars twice, and was the deciding factor in both...and (3) we stayed because you wanted us to...and, in the long run..it worked. the protection we gave allowed europe to become what it is today. in the process of doing that we became, as they say in texas, the top dog....o.k....now what? the american people did not elect bush, but went along the supreme court ruling.....(how much damage can he do?)...then came 9/11... all bets are off...like or not, he is THE PRESIDENT. however, there is an international vote, and the u.k. backs the u.s....if you can't get tony to listen, then how does anyone think we can get george'a attention?... we are all in this together..... now that i think about it, getting stoned and letting kteee show me the sights might not be such a bad idea. anyone know where i can find a cheep flat? i might be there for some time.

Please don't tell me what I should or shouldn't be doing Tricia, where in my post did I show any support for war? I just think that there are many other more suitable outlets for these sentiments, this is a site devoted to Carvoeiro, not international affairs and politics.

I think you must have missed the point of my post which is that this stuff is all around us all the time and it's nice to have something more pleasant to think about now and again - I object to being told that I'm burying my head in the sand (again where did I say I was?) when you have no idea of my personal situation, in fact I'm a lot more involved than you could ever know. Offensive comments get us nowhere now can we go back to discussing Casa Algarvia and other really relevant points.....

Just read cowboys comments --- enough said; its all out now isnt it - americans are "top dogs" !! doesnt that say it all! Expect Tony will be your next president..
Cant help thinking Bill would have managed it better -he may have been "passionate", but he was also compassionate.
In this debate im on side with France &Germany & others -give peace a chance!
I have American cousins in Minnesota & theyre in agreement with us,and they certainly dont call themselves top dogs -but perhaps you have to be a cowboy!

pleae keep your thoughts for the other message boards that specifically deal with this subject. I dont want to come onto this site to be preached to. Use this site for what is it supposed to be used for which is promoting the village of Carvoeiro.
