Driving from Lisbon
My family and I recently returned from our 4th visit to Carvoeiro and I am already planning next year's trip!
Early indications are that I can get flights much cheaper to Lisbon than I can for Faro (for next August) so as a change I was considering flying into Lisbon and driving down. It seems to be only about 170 miles (about 3hrs?) from Lisbon to Carvoeiro and reasoanbly straightforward. I would appreciate comments from anyone who has made the journey or has knowledge of the route.

We flew to Lisbon this year at Easter and drove to Carvoeiro and back, it took 2 hours exactly with no stops and very little traffic.
The toll costs about 15 euros coming down - remember to take a ticket from the booth as they will charge you 80 euros if you get to the end without a ticket!! Going back it's an extra couple of euros to cross the Vasco da Gama bridge.
The only tricky bit is when you leave the airport - you exit the car park to a large roundabout with traffic lights to each exit - you almost double back on yourself and take the last exit before going back into the airport. After that follow the signs for 'ponte vasco da gama' and take the right hand slip road when indicated. Once you have crossed the bridge follow the signs for the Algarve and you can't go too far wrong.
There are plenty of service stations en route and they tend to be nicer than those you will find on UK motorways.
We didn't find it a problem and would certainly consider doing it again!

We have used both Faro and Lisbon airports many times over the past 20 years and the journey from Lisbon Airport to the Algarve is a dream now compared to the past.
Kteee has given you good advice above and the view from the Vasco da Gamma bridge is great.
We will be using the route in October as the BA schedule flights worked out much cheaper than easyJet (go is sadly missed
).
