Avvie wrote: PM - was following your previous advice regarding the warning - the warning states that before you run kazabegone you have to run the ISPFix.

It says Download it, not run it. kazabegone can break your internet connectivity, so if that happens you need to run lspfix afterwards, so you need to get lspfix and instructions for same before running kazabegone.
Hence my advice that if you aren't sure, get someone to fix it for you.

New Problem

Post by Avvie »

I have a Vaio laptop which I use an optical mouse with. When typing text the cursor jumps all over the place and someone said this is because the laptop's own touchpad is still active. Does anyone know how to turn it off?

If you are still having problems I suggest you go here for what I find is always reliable and fairly prompt advice:

Most of the stuff on there is 'how can I use p2p software'. The one kazaa remove thread I found said to use adaware. If you think that random advice from some bod is ok, then go ahead.

Solution depends on model. Google
Vaio disable touchpad

And there is quite a list.

next question (if I may)

is it OK to leave your computer plugged in and online 24 hrs/day?
I seem to remember reading something on here about the danger of lightning. If your house is wired up properly is it considered necessary to take precautions?

My dad always tells me to pull out all the plugs to electrical appliances, including the computers, because of the electrical surges that can occur either by the lightening itself or by the electricity going off and then on again during a lightening storm. So I always do it. I assume he knows what he is talking about as he was an electrical engineer. :?

Digger,

I'd certainly agree with Bruxinha and her Dad on this one - best to err on the side of caution! Even if your computer is not powered up, it is still at risk during an electrical storm while plugged into the mains or even the telephone jack.

A UPS (an Uninterruptable Power Supply, not the courier!) is an almost must-have purchase in the Algarve as it will not only afford you time to shut down your computer and peripherals properly if there is a power outage, but most models will offer protection against power surges and so on for your computer, monitor, printer, etc., and also your telephone line - I have heard of people who've had phones and fax machines literally blown off their desk during a lightening strike!

And even though I have a UPS, I still unplug anything and everything from the mains during an electrical storm - it's just safer that way...

...and although it's not going to do much harm in the short term to leave a well-cooled computer online 24 hours a day, I'd recommend not doing so for anything longer than is necessary - it's best to give the poor machine a rest! I usually only leave mine on if, for example, I am downloading something, virus-scanning or defragmenting overnight.

Ok know I could probably find this one out if I fiddled long enough but having replaced firefox with opera how do I stop it logging me out out of everywhere within minutes - honestly in the time it takes me to reply to post on co.com it has logged me out of almost every other site I am on - for it's time saving benefits - opera is no use to me at all if I have to magic wand each time I am gone for more than a minute!

Thanking you techies in advance.

Whilst power problems can blow pc's up, and things like routers, it is a pretty rare thing to happen. I've got 10 pc's here, most stay on the whole time and I've never had a problem. I don't know whether it is better to leave it on or not. Switching on and off can thermal stress the boards which can break the fine tracks, but if you leave it on the whole time, the fans will get knackered quicker.
