I posted it to show you what might have happened previously. Any guest (or member) can 'log' into this site and sign off with your name! This is one reason why I am always going on about becoming a member.

This is serious and I now see the logic in membership. This matter needs to be discussed in a sensible fashion by all the present registered

Registering on here does not put you at security risk at all so please don't let that stop you

I think there are other opinions on this. The software often used for forums is not regarded as particularly secure. All email addresses (shown or not) are stored and can be hacked. It is more secure to keep a web mail address only for signing on to forums and not use your everyday one. A pity therefore that Hotmail is rejected, otherwise I might be a member.

How best? You advocate a 'members only' forum. It won't stop personal attacks etc, but at least you'll know who's attacking you - and the Mods can take them off the forum if they go too far.

I don't think being 'members-only' would stop many (if any) people joining. After all, if you want the RAC or AA to give you road-side assistance you have to be a member to get them to come out and rescue you.

To Guest2 - I am glad you have brought that up. I have always kept my virus protection up to date but last year my pc was infected and email was generating emails from Portugal - the only website I had used was this once so I thought the same as Michael has assumed here - that the connection has been via this website and therefore I have specifically not registered. Seems too much of a coincidence to me

I have been a member of this forum since it switched from being a message board to a phpBB forum in January 2003 and have never had any portugese spam - you'd think with the money I have squandered (I meant spent) in their country - a little tinned meat derivative would be the least they could do!!!!!

I've been a member here since Feb. 2003, and I've never had any portugese spam either.

phpbb is pretty secure and even if someone did get the list of email addresses what could they do with them? Addd them to a spam list I suppose, but most email addresses are probably already harvested. If you send an email to someone who then downloads a trojan or suchlike, the address book is nicked, together with your addy.
Anti virus are of limited use in those circumstances because they are generally not classed as virii, not using Internet Explorer is a much better defence.

The very first thing I do each time I log onto the web is update my virus, firewall, spam and adware software. Not once have I not done it . . . and I was attacked by a virus last year

In the time it took me to update my software I was infected. You have to remember that the millisecond you're online you're open to attack - it dosn't have to be the site you are looking at, it could be from anywhere or anyone. This forum is one of the safer ones and I have never had any Portuguese spam in all the time I've been a member.

Michael I know you previously dabbled with Firefox, so confidant in what you say about the benefits of Opera, I have downloaded it, now despite what initially looks like clear instructions to import my Mozilla Firefox bookmarks I cannot seem to make it happen - any help with this gratefully received.
