Just got back from a few weeks in Florida.
Anyone who's been there will be scratching their heads about how complex the Portuguese toll system is by comparison.
USA toll booths have a "Free Pass" lane for use when drivers or companies have purchased a monthly or annual pass. No attendant needed. Then there is a "Correct Change" lane where you toss the toll money coins into a scoop or feed notes into a slot - if amount is correct light goes to green and off you go. Once again no attendant needed. The third option is "Change Given" lane with an attendant to receive your payment, giving change if necessary. There are usually two or three "Change Given" lanes, but we found that only one was usually manned, but no large queues formed as most drivers seemed to have the correct money anyway. I used to save my spare coins in the car's ashtray for any toll booth I came across
I realise that paying wages for an attendant costs money, but I'm sure the small number required in the Algarve would not have cost the earth.
What was wrong with the take ticket/raise barrier method. When I drove from Algarve - Lisbon a couple of years back this is what I did, feeding ticket into machine at other end and paying the displayed fee to pass through exit barrier. Once again, this was not labour intensive. Were either of these methods ever considered when A22 tolls were being planned?

They were obviously sold a crazy system that was never going to be cost effective!!!

"The EN125 has turned into road chaos, with long and endless queues of vehicles. The A22 is almost empty with a drop in vehicles of more than 60%, leading to Euroscut to admit that the traffic was at 'Intensity Zero'. Tourists, particularly Spanish, are boycotting the Algarve and already prefer to travel to other places" read a statement sent to newsrooms.
The Users' Committee says the situation is now at "an alarming and frightening scale" and gives as an example 'Vila Real de Santo Antonio' where the "declines in sales to Spanish tourists are the order of 75% ".
"Social and economic collapse in the Algarve, with one of the highest unemployment levels in the country, is approaching very quickly if the tolls are not immediately suspended." Warns the statement ."

Interesting to hear about US tolls, but the one example we found in NZ was even easier. After the journey, you rang a tollfree 0800 number, entered your registratuion number and credit card number : end of....
Minimal labour, no problems.
Don't know how quickly the system was updated , but something similar with payment via the web would be ideal for Portugal. too late now I fear!

Not for the first time the accuracy of the Algarve Residents reporting is bought into question.
We have not seen nor have we been told by others of " endless queues " on the N125, we have been to Algarve shopping, and Aqua both hot spots in busy times and it was no worse than other years.
Yes the 125 is busier and it will become a problem in the summer but please can we have some accuracy in reports , does the Resident and its promoters want to put off even more visitors to the Algarve !!

It would be cheap and simple to enable payment on the web, but the authorities are not even bothered to set up a page in English for visitors. Two types of tolls in Ireland:
1: toll booths both manned (change and receipts given) & unmanned - no change given - or easypass where you have a number of dedicated lanes for easypass (frequent users would have easypass)
2: overhead gantry as in Portugal, no booths. pay in ADVANCE or within 24 hours at paypoint shop (€3 per trip), or register your car number to your credit card ,free and easy to do, (€2.50 per trip) or again purchase an easypass system, a few companies off this service for a small charge per month (€2.00 per trip)
not as simple as NZ but still much simpler than Portugal.

Perhaps they should of contacted Boris and purchased the system used by London Congestion charge. Simple to use either on-line, by phone, at a pay shop the choices are endless.

OK, I'm back in the UK now and I have to say, what a good idea the tolls are!
For this first time since the A22 opened I have been driving on roads that were once lost to me. In May 2005 I mentioned the 'new' motorways and commented about them (SEE HERE) yet after all that I said I used them extensively . . . until this last two weeks.
After using the A22 from Faro to the Village I never used it again. Instead we drove all over the Algarve telling TomTom to 'avoid motorways' and we were delighted to rediscover the roads, villages and scenery we sped past on our previous visits.
OK, so the N125 was busier (and will be more so in the 'season') but it's not the only road, there's plenty more around just waiting to be discovered.
Our return to Faro via the N125 was a doddle and we were at the airport within an hour of leaving the villa. Next visit we shall be using the N125 in both directions and reacquainting ourselves with the non-motorway roads and leave the A22 to the police patrol cars and the activists who are sabotaging the gantries!

Son in law went to the PO to pay Tuesday's toll from the airport and had to pay the previous user's toll fees as well. It was only €2 but I can see this being a big problem. We used the 125 coming and will do the same going home on Sunday.

We took a trip to Quinta da Largo, but our friends got us lost heading for the 125, so gave up and went on A22 to Guia then off. So we now need to pay. Hopefully no previous toll as we collected the car soon after 9am today.
