Monte Carvoeiro

Just to get back on topic (yeah! first time I've done that!!), when I was a kid, my parents often used to take me and my brother to Monte Carvoeiro and it was always a lot of fun.

They used to have traditional dancing in the square where they would involve everyone watching and I have pictures of us whirling round the square with dancers dressed in traditional costumes.

I used to think it was such a treat that when I was old enough to go on my own, I was disappointed to find that all the entertainment had gone.

Beachfront, city centre, tourist hotspot - the prices always soar and often the quality, genuiness and friendliness of food/venue declines (although that is certainly not everywhere).

Sometimes there is a choice between having a fantastic value meal or a gorgeous view - but only sometimes.

In India - a proper glass bottle of coca cola at a beach shack was 9p; at the waterfalls, the spice plantation, etc 6p; at small village on route to waterfalls 4p.

The message appears to be that many businesses will charge what they think they can get away with although eventually the clientele vote with their feet - if the price does not match the quality of the food or the ambiance of the surroundings.

p.s. I do wonder however how long it will take the indians to realise that they have a way to go before us brits think we are being fleeced at tghose prices

Can anyone tell which three restuarants are up for sale? I had wondered how many of them managed to make a living as they were often very quiet. But then I usually visit off season so just assumed they were much busier in the peak months.

Its three on the left hand side Lesley. One has been closed so long I can't remember the name (but its next to the cocktail bar) and one is The stone Steak and the one next door.

I think part of the problem has been marketing or lack of it, friends of ours who regularly visit Rocha Brava have never heard of its existance, and there are no signs in Carvoeiro town promoting it. We used to find it very handy for those days that you couldn't face the walk down into town
(or up it more to the point) Its still nice however to visit the Cocktail Bar and the Indian Restaurant and one or two others are still open.

We started coming out to CVO 17 years ago & would often spend an evening at Monte Carvoeiro it was always busy, not just bars & restaurants but a few shops as well. It was expensive though & as more competition opened in the town people just stopped going there, I think they priced themselves out of the market. It all looks so run down & kind of seedy now.

Regarding the portugese being miserable if you walk along any street in England or go into most shops it's not like you're greeted like long lost friends, you're lucky if you get greeted at all let alone a smile. And as for their driving a friend of mine in the UK having collected her 3 children from school was making her way home, she inadvertantly got in the way of a white transit & even though she had try to apologise the driver persued her car & acutally intentionally forced her off the road she ended up in a ditch at the M23/A3 round about. Fotunately none of them were badly hurt, just minor cuts & bruises. I think possibly those brits that live abroad forget what an unpleasant race the english can be. We noted the first year we came on holiday that the portuguese seem to be by nature a dour race, but they were always so marvellous with the children that we didn't mind & found that with perserverance politeness, consideration & a smile soon payed dividends.

Once again and much to my dismay - we have to descend into having a go at another nation to make a point. Always so sad and unnecessary.

If I were to look at the places I have visited and then identify the best food, the warmest people, quaintest character, good standard of living for all, the most interesting culture, the most beautiful landscape, the best weather, the most gorgeous buildings,the greatest snorkelling, the most impressive sights, best standards of customer service, the friendliest bars, the most gorgeous beach, etc, etc ......

....... I wouldn't come up with Portugal or Menorca or USA or Greece or Turkey or Spain or the UK, I would come up with an fictional Utopia made up of the best bits from many countries as I am sure many of you would too

We have just returned to the Uk from MC where we have apartment 120. This was our third trip in the last three months and already have our flights booked for our next visit. Monte Carvoeiro is one of the best areas around and I should like to say that the only reason our property is for sale is the fact we spend so much time there now, we are looking for something larger!
