Hi

I agree with the earlier post. Believe it or not you will get used to it. When I first moved to Portugal it drove me barmy but after about 3 months I stopped noticing it. In fact, when I stay at our house in the countryside at the weekends I can't sleep because it's too quiet!

We went to Madeira a couple of years ago, and the dogs barking all the time ruined the holiday. Hope they it doesn't get as bad in CVO

Worse than barking dogs is this bl...dy idiot on his motorbike that's running up the hill in CVO 2-3 times a day. Why is nobody stopping him ???

I would agree with everyone that said that you get used to it. My uncle stayed here and said "how do you sleep with all those dogs barking around here" and I replied "what dogs?" When I was living on campus at university in West london, I was on the Heathrow flight path and as well as planes going over every 30 seconds, Concorde used to fly over at 6am every morning. My parents couldn't believed how I could sleep there, but sleep I did...after a few weeks!!

I think if I was chained up every day of my life on a short piece of rope or chain, I too might start to bark and howl, wouldn't most of you? I am sure the dogs go mad after a while. It is so cruel and stupid. I feel like going around late at night and cutting them all free. I think they would be better off as strays than that. I can find no logic to it whatsoever. If an intruder entered their house the dog wouldn't be able to get to them because they are restricted in movement and as they bark all the time, no one takes any notice.

So, whilst I am sure it is annoying, have a little patience and I am sure you will stop noticing it so much and have a thought for those poor old mutts!!!

Have you any idea what it's like to be deprived of sleep night after night after night? It's fkin 'orrible!

The longest I've been without sleep is in 1991 when I went five days and nights without any - my room-mate was a dreadful snorer and it was impossible for me to sleep. I swear, if I had a gun I'd have shot him . . . and I'm not kidding. I grew to hate him each night and I dreaded gong to bed.

Happily I was saved by the Baron of Culcrech who allowed me to stay at his flat for a couple of nights. On my first night there there was a fire alarm at the hotel and my mate's sleep was disturbed - justice!

OK...I'm still waiting for the Ultra Sonic machine to arrive and have put off execution until then.......I agree it's so creul to leave the poor thing tied day and night to a short chain.....and I should report that I'm thinking of taking a different approach to the imminent slaying.....It's not the Dogs fault , I did try to release it last night after dark but it's very aggressive and couldnt get near it...so I'm thinking instead of the poisened bone arrangement..maybe I'll invite the neighbours for a Sunday Barbi and poisen the sausages......

A few years back on holiday in Turkey there was a chained-up dog barking all night next door to our apartment.

After two nights without sleep I was getting really fed up. Sharen and our friend went 'round with a packet of biscuits and set it free. I had a good night's sleep.

It's not about barking dogs but in response to DaGi and the pest on the quad bike.We watched him nearly every evening come out from the back of the Chinese and roar up the hill.No-one seems to take any notice.

I think you may have a point about snorers Michael. I must say that whilst I can get used to barking dogs, jet engines and trains, I could never ever sleep in the same room as a snorer...that does drive me nuts!

Hope the ultra sonic machine works guest, otherwise poisoning the owners might be the next step, as even if you poison the poor mutt, they will probably just go and get another one to chain up and bark incessantly.

It is interesting Janet O what you say about the quad bike and no one seems to notice. I think that just goes to confirm that it is a cultural thing ie some things bother some nationalities/people more than others. I don't think my parents' Portuguese neighbours worry when they shout across the valley to one another and sit on their car horns for ages, rather than get out the car to call for someoone. It also seems to me that British people tend not to like it when others wander on their land/property and call it trespassing, whereas I don't think on the whole Portuguese bother about that at all.

It's true but the bloody stupid dog went back the next night looking for more biscuits, they chained him up again and locked the gate so we couldn't do another rescue mission
