For what it is worth I was told on some authority by someone well up in the Aguas Barlavento organisation that there is no problem in the Barlavento area (Faro to the west) as there are more than enough plentiful boreholes to cope. The real problem is in the Sotavento region (east of Faro).

If you want to get really depressed then read Marc Reisner's "Cadillac Desert", subtitled 'The American west and its disappearing water'. This shows what will happen when we assume that water is in unlimited supply.

I am sure that Cowboy knows what I am talking about, coming from Texas! They predict that water will be the 21st century oil - perhaps that's why all the UK's water companies have been sold off?

(Mind you, it has been raining here in UK enough for the next few summers at least.)
