I am just back and we ate out around 7 times in the fortnight. never overcharged. my daughter and her boyfriend however on a visit to vilamoura were overcharged. 4 of them were over on a day trip and decided to eat out on the marina. big mistake. food was basic and they were overcharged by a bottle of wine. didn't pay it of course.
neither they nor us were overcharaged in the 4 weeks combined we spend in Carvoeiro.

Villa Medici Jan 2010- we weren't actually overcharged but were the subjects of a little bit of sharp practice. the girl serving us (russian - she told us ) rattled off the specials and one of them was sea bass. one of our party had this special, rest us of had italian off the menu. lovely food, reasonable prices. but when the bill came the sea bass was €40 or something like that. our own fault for not asking at the time, hence now when we go anywhere we always ask what price the special is as most restaurants
don't actually display it. sometimes we get funny looks for asking. O Salmao had superb specials last week for 'normal' prices ie somewhere around the €13/€14 mark.

anyway neither of us were overcharaged in the 4 weeks combined we were in carvoeiro.

I should also say that after asking for house red wine in a MCO restaurant, and receiving one of the best red wines IMO, we were expecting to be stung when the bill came. However, it was only around €10 so a very pleasant surprise!

Having learned the hard way at Bella Vita I now always ask the price of any specials I am interested in. O Barradas used to be very good as the owner told you the price of all the dishes not on the menu. Bella Vita never do. At O Frango Maluco the waiter said he did not know and showed no inclination to find out! As the food was poor I showed no inclination to go back. Over the years I have experienced occasional overcharging but I seldom suspected that this was deliberate.
