the best advice i was given years ago, is dont eat in restuarants that just open for a season, but are owned and run all year round and where you see a lot of portuguese sitting and eating...since anyone who lives here and gets something will soon be back to complain.

not the case with rest where tourists go, get sick and then are back in the uk and cant complain afterwards....a bit of common sense and observation will go a long way to see which are good and bad

Not nearly enough by your average 20% Port but a 70% Tsipero should eradicate most - haha!!

I actually have a completely different problem with complimentary drinks, what to do with them if you don't like it (obviously not a problem in Portgugal as it tends to be Port). I always worry that it looks rude to leave them (and presents a health hazard to later diners as we have now found out). I have killed a plant in one place by disposing of my drink in the plant pot over the course of a fortnight's holiday

Killing pot plants how true ! I am not a great fan of port,but the worst must be the imitation Bailey's.How awful was that stuff!! Luckily hubby usually has coffee so anything nasty gets added to the lees.

Got a funny story about the lees too - in one restaurant my complimentary drink was so disgusting I decided to get rid of it by pouring it into the dregs of my coffee, I was spotted by the owner who come over and remarked that he too liked to swill out the coffee lees with his drink and it was a lovely way to enjoy the best of both - he then stood there smiling until I had knocked it back - UGH!!

Nothing beats the "Lizard" you get in a Chinese restaurant though. High RPM, no taste and little chunks of dead lizard swimming in the brew.

I used to go to a chinese down the road from where I worked in Lisbon. On night we were having a IT department dinner (all males) and we rounded it off with a couple of those (it was more of a dare than anything else). Having finished a whole bottle between the 5 of us, we were allowed to take the bottle with Lizzy and Lazzaro (the two unfortunate lizzards) with us. We proceeded to place it on top of the cabinet next to the door of our department for everyone to admire.

Turns out people were so disgusted and afraid, that they just avoided the department completely. Our workload went down about 65%.

Now, I don't mind the lizard stuff - perhaps because you gets loads of cred just by saying you will knock one back and to be honest, you do just that - no sips, one huge swallow.

It is when it looks like an o.k. drink and you take a sip/slurp and hate it, then it becomes almost impossible to raise it to your lips

gerry, we were in your neck of the Portuguese woods last week: armacao de pera. found a proper tasca down a side street near the beach: beautiful fresh fish, as much as you could eat (bbq’d) for 8 euros per person

…..so yes, it’s alright for me….

Good for you kiddo,think i know the place,only other place kinda like it was in cabannas,the restaurant is owned by the same family that own the fish market who also go fishing ,food was just so good,hope you liked armacao i know its not cvo but i have to be honest i find it so much easier to relax and kick back among the portugese

We like Armacao de Pera a lot.
I love the beaches along there..to walk and always find a nice spot to sunbathe
Sat in nice little church there quite close to the front.
But have only eaten near the seafront.....where abouts is this nice place you ate at Digger.be interested to know?
I might be out next month..for a month....looking around...and would like to try somewhere different to eat!

I don’t know armacao de pera at all well, so perhaps Gerry could explain better than me. All I remember is the restaurant is in the east end of town where everything is down on a lower level, same level as the beach. And it’s no more than a one minute walk from the beach in a kind of an alleyway. They had a stainless steel table outside pilled up with a mix of half dozen or more different small fish. What Gerry says about them owning the market explains why all the fish are so small; I guess they sell the big ones in the market. My favourite is the linguado (sole) about 4-5 inches long. They bbq the different fish and the waiter goes round the tables with a big plate for you to choose. And they keep coming; they are not shy. Included in the price, 8 euros, is fries and salad. I don’t rate the vinho da casa, which comes in jugs from a tap on the wall. I think I’ll invest in a bottle Borba or Terras d’el Rei next time.

It sounds such good value for money and I bet the food tastes good too

I have found the answer to this in the FOOD section of the forum, but must say we visited this place last year and would definatley go back, but perhaps refuse the free drink!!
