PIRLAMPOS CHILDRENS HOME
Hi Thank you everyone for your comments.
We will be in Carvoeiro from 5th September & will be pleased for directions to Pirlampos Childrens Home.
Roy4eyes said if we get in touch he or Gambrinus will give directions.
As we are new to the Forum how do we get in touch when we are out there.
Again thanks for all the promises in making the orphans life a little brighter.

Primark
I'm sure there must be a few Brits that could pick up some cheap underwear for the children from Primark. Things are so cheap in there I'm sure things like pants and socks are something ridiculous like 6 pairs for £2.00. I for sure will get some next time I am back in the UK. I am over in Ferragudo so may well start something up over here.
Gambrinus - do they have a christmas parcel collection for the children. I know someone organises something similar.

However, I think we will be looking at providing the children with clothes at regular intervals throughout the year or at least whenever there is a reasonable amount acumulated.
If we can find a cubic meter or two in a dry environment where we can store the clothes in boxes for a few weeks, we would be in buisness.
Following some corrspondence to clarify again what is needed, Ms Birch took the time to type up this memo to help us coordinate our efforts for collecting clothing, etc:

I am so glad that people are starting to collect items to donate to the children at Pirilampos. As you requested, I have a few suggestions that might help them choose what to bring/donate:
The children always need new underpants, boys and girls all sizes from 3 years to 14.
These are available locally at markets, cut-price clothing stores, even Continente, at reasonable prices.
Plain coloured short socks, sizes 2 to 14 yrs, white, blue, black and grey, if they come in the same colours then they do not need to be ‘paired’ when the washing machine eats the occasional one!! Socks are quite expensive here and I have found that better bargains are available in the UK. Also it is easier to get plain ones in the UK. Mixtures are better than pure cotton or wool because of the industrial drier!
New shoes are bulky to bring from the UK. There are very good ‘warehouse’ shoe shops opening up here locally, I have just purchased 14 pairs of sports shoes which cost between 9 and 20 Euros. The children usually need new shoes every 3 or 4 months, so this is always an area where people can help. Sports shoes of all sizes or from 30 to 40 are needed. Darker colours are better for the winter. All the children have shoes for the start of this new term, so these items will be needed after Christmas.
We have just been given new winter pyjamas which should last the children at least until Christmas. After that, all sizes of pyjamas from 2 to 14 years old, boys and girls.
SECOND HAND ITEMS:
The home already receives a large amount of second hand clothes. Sadly, some of it is not suitable, and often it is mixed with adult sizes, which involves a lot of sorting, which is difficult due to the short-staffing problems at the home. There is also a lack of dry storage space, so the home has to be very selective in what clothes it keeps.
If anyone is thinking of bringing second hand clothes from abroad, please select items that are in excellent condition and that can be washed in industrial machines. For example, pure wool items or anything that should be dry cleaned is not suitable. As a general rule we try to provide new shoes for all the children, rather than second-hand.
I hope this doesn’t sound as though the home is being too demanding, they are grateful for everything that is given to them that they can make good use of. But from a practical point of view if people are bringing items from England in their luggage it makes sense that those items are of real benefit to the children at the home.

I am in Porches but I have a large roof storage area that is dry and lit , if I can help please let me know.

I sell Usborne books for children (which are in English). We often do fundraising by selling the books either at an event or just passing around leaflets. We donate 10% of the sales to the charity concerned (or we give them 10% of the sales worth of books of their choice if they prefer but I guess the English books wouldn't be much use here!).
So if this is of interest and anyone would like leaflets or more information to raise any money, please contact me.

Following a donation of 200 euros by two of our regular forumers, I have received the following letter from Peta Birch, the fundraiser for the home.

Once again www.carvoeiro.com has raised money to help the children at Pirirlampos. Your donation of 200 euros is being transferred to the Amigos das Crianças account this week.

The Amigos have been helping raise money for a new bus. The bus should be delivered this month. The Amigos bank account has also paid for repairs to the old dining room roof, a new clutch for the old bus to keep it running, heaters, cupboards and shoes.
