Il Pont Romana. SILVES

Post by Bruce Wallis »

People always go on about wanting to experience a genuine Portuguese restaurant, rather than the tourist international fayre we pay too much for in Carvoeiro.

The latest place we have tried is the restaurant on the opposite side of the old Roman bridge in Silves. I believe it is called "Il Pont"

It isnt stylish, it's full of locals, eating their national style food, and drinking unpretentious local wine from a carafe.
Julia and my son-in-law shared a cataplana to die for.
My daughter had loin of pork in a cream and mushroom sauce,
and I had cabrito stew....really tasty....be it lamb or goat I'm not quite sure.

The average price of a main course is about 8 or 9 euros.

To find this restaurant, turn left the turning just before where you would normally turn left, to go over the Arade bridge into Slives.
There is plenty of car parking.

When I went to Silves last time we didn't eat in the touristy part - Cafe Inglis for example, but found a small cafe in a side street - lunch was just a roll of bread with a bit of stew and a beer - really good stuff and very cheap. Followed in the evening with a really cheap and good meal - barbeque at Bruce's place :D - mind you, Julia did all the hard work

the last time we ate in Ponta Roman [last year] it was a awful meal and we decided there and then never to go back again and that was the concensus of all 8 of us, but perhaps it has a new chef and redeemed itself. we live qite close to Silves and t=one of the best palce for authentic portugese cooking is one of the restaurants on the way up to monchique and also in silves the restaurant behind trhe castle.

It must be good by Portuguese standards because on a Sunday at lunchtime it is packed with Portuguese families. We really enjoyed it! :)

I think the thing is, that if you expect 4/5 star Carvoeiro restaurant style food....you WILL be disappointed
This is Algarvian regional cooking.....for the Portuguese. The authentic thing if you like ....not tourist fayre.

To me it's a welcome and enjoyable change.
