Affordable good Japanese food

Post by roy4eyes »

Carol and I love Japanese food but normally consider it to be vastly overpriced (although we realise the work that goes in presentation) for what you get.
A couple of months ago we were in Tavira - a lovely place and well worth a visit if staying in CVO - went into the new shopping centre there and came across a Japanese ' all you can eat for €10.50 lunch and € 12.50 dinner' restaurant.
We thought at this price it must be rubbish - but no !!, it was superb with a wide choice of hot and cold starters, your choice of raw food cooked in a wok, followed by dessert of mainly fresh fruit. As a bonus the views across Tavira to the sea are amazing.
Even though it is a 45 minute drive from CVO we have now been back three times and the standard has been maintained.
It is not necessary to book but for a party you can phone the Sushi Mish Mish on 281 322 021.

We love Japanese food, our favourite is Fuji in Albufeira & we usually sit at the teppan yaki(?) table. Not cheap though.

Where abouts in Tavira? I think H would like to be let loose on the all you can eat menu.

It must be my prescription Roy I'll have to be asking for a refund :D. It's more likely my mind though.

Well in actual fact as I don't know Tavira at all I'll re-phrase the question, where is the new shopping centre?

Just off the 125 in an elevated position inland of the centre with a large Continente sign on the side.

As an aside there were a party of Japanese tourists dining there on our last visit and they all seemed very happy with the food.

I spent 6 weeks in Japan in 2002 covering the World Cup.

My 2 memories are of 1: Standing at the back of the goal in Sapporo, actually on the grassed area behind the goal, when Beckham scored against the Argies.

....and Japanese food. Nothing but Japanese food for 6 weeks.
As a one off, it's fine....but morning noon and evening for 6 weeks solid.....and that's Japanese food for the Japanese in Japan....not the version suitably westernised for the european palette.......never again!!
If I never ever have to eat japanese food again until the day I die.....it will be too soon!!!

We spent some time touring around northern Thailand eating what ever was on offer in local places.

Our final week was spent on samui, the first night we thought " lets go for something different " being a holiday island we were sure we could get pizza or pasta.

First place on the beach we came to local fish restaurant, we carried on eating Thai for the rest of the holiday, probably the best food in the world.

Have spent some time in the states , fine if you everything fried or fast food, probably the worst food in the world.

I wish someone would open a good Asian restaurant in Carvoeiro instead of the old fashioned mediocre or downright terrible places that are on offer at the moment. I get sushi & sashimi from Apolonia a couple of times a week, but it is sooo expensive! Should learn to make my own I suppose.

Unfortunatley I think that " good " thai or chinese food would cost more than the average holidaymaker is prepared to pay.
Good Asian food is not cheap where ever you are.

We adore Thai food......when done well. We also developed our taste for it in the non touristy areas of Thailand....and the wonderful beach restaurants around Hui-Hin

My understanding is that the Thai food in Carvoeiro is dire, and that the Chinese isnt alot better. That is a real shame.

We would certainly be prepared to pay a market price for GOOD Thai food.

Sushi & Sashimi Carvoeiro...
For Those Who do not know, Mistral (the side road IN Carvoeiro), had open a Sushi and Sashimi Restaurant, with a Real Japan Master Sushi....
And it's not expensive... They do a full 12 course menu for ... 8,90 euro Lunch time and 12,90 euro Dinner time
It was a surprise to find this in Carvoeiro !!! But, a nice surprise !

Mistral has been closed for several months, as the owner has moved to Turkey to look after her mothers business interests there. The place looks very run down and the large palm tree in the courtyard has been attacked by the red palm weevil and is shedding it's fronds. As far as I am aware they will not be open this summer, unless they can find somebody who wants to rent the place for the rest of the year.

Not too sure what R. Wethereyet means as the Mistral (upstairs on in road) certainly IS open and advertising the suhi as described by algarborn.

The "garden" part on the out road looks the same as ever. It never opens until later as it needs the reliable weather. The poor old palm tree has "had it" but the rest looks the same as ever awaiting the usual last minute frantic clean up!
