Funky Chicken aka Frango Dourado
Funky Chicken aka Frango Dourado
Just along from the Irish Times bar is Carvoeiro's best kept secret - the Funky Chicken!! The owner is Florin and he is one of the friendliest and most genuine people you could hope to meet. I went there with my wife and daughter and her young friend - we had been advised to try the whole chicken piri piri - I'm glad we did. Whilst we waited on our chips being fried we were all treated to a glass of Port and Florin apologised for the delay. He need not have bothered - he was both amusing and very friendly - we decided there and then to make our last meal of the holiday another 'carry-out' from the Funky Chicken (or Frango Dourado as Florin said it should be known as for a reason that I'm sure he will share with you if you ask him).
The prices are very reasonable (a real bargain) and the service is second to none. I told Florin that we would be back next year and he replied with a grin "I'll be here!".
We certainly hope so - Florin made our holiday all the more enjoyable.

the guy in there used to work in the chinese the second one up the hill and we would go and visit him every time we were in cvo. he is a lovely man and always greet you with a smile and had the kids laughing. he has a littile girl cauld arouia not sure of spelling but she is one of the most adorable little girl i have ever seen. the funky chicken has been opened a few years now and we tend to go about twice when were there some for the food some to visit the man that runs it.

I met his wife and I think his daughters name is Aurora - I may be wrong. My daughter and her friend went to the Funky Chicken on their own one night and they were introduced to Florin's wife and their lovely daughter. Nice guy and a real family man.

16 months ago I had a takeaway from this establishment and was served by a really nice Brit lady, however the food was poor, the price extortonate and was cold. Never again.
Re: Funky Chicken aka Frango Dourado
Its a shame you had a bad experience - as far as I was aware the place has since been taken over by Florin and his prices are anything but extortionate as a simple glance will reveal.baggysallyjane wrote:16 months ago I had a takeaway from this establishment and was served by a really nice Brit lady, however the food was poor, the price extortonate and was cold. Re: Funky Chicken aka Frango Dourado
I prefer the well established portugese takeaway further up on the opposite side of the road, cheaper, fresher and home cooked and not out of a jar with cheap bags of cheap meat and frozen veg, which is what the Funky Chicken use.(Watch the delivery vehicle turn up and then you will see)
Re: Funky Chicken aka Frango Dourado
The new funky chicken has no connection with the old " brit " owned establsihment.
He owned the takeaway and the Blue Rock butcher but closed both down and went back to the Uk last year.
Both are now owned and run by locals.

The purpose of my starting this thread was to express my honest opinion - I enjoyed good serviceand good food at reasonable prices. I have no knowledge of delivery vehicles or sauce out of jars etc etc - the guy was friendly and I will visit this place on my return to Carvoeiro.
Re: Funky Chicken aka Frango Dourado
Thanks EMM, I was under the impression they were both under new hands, which I have eluded to on another thread a while back when this place was discussed.
Regarding food deliveries,Horzah, it is always of interest to see what food is being delivered to a food establishment, it gives an indication of the quality of food being served and this, moreover, helps you to see if quality, produce and costs equate to what you pay. However, I did make it perfectly clear it was last year we visited the Funky Chicken, when it was under the previous ownership.

I enjoyed eating in Happys, Gales, and the Chinese high up on the left hand side (name escapes me) - I did NOT enjoy eating in Via Italia. I don't need to stakeout these establishments to ascertain where they get there produce or try to infiltrate the delivery process to get a closer look at the 'goods'baggysallyjane wrote:Thanks EMM, I was under the impression they were both under new hands, which I have eluded to on another thread a while back when this place was discussed.

It may be useful to discover the source of the ingredients but in most cases all anyone ever gets is the experience of paying for and eating the food you order. If you enjoy it you tell others - if you don't you do the same. Far too often its only the negative that people feel obliged to report - I on the other hand like to give praise where praise is due. People who live in CVO for extended periods of time will always know 'a great place up the road and round the corner' which no doubt sells high quality food at reasonable prices. My intention was to tell casual tourists of a place which is within easy reach of a bar they may or may not pass on their travels (Irish Times) and tell them that just along from it is a decent takeaway - I wasn't trying to give directions to a Michelin Restaurant
Re: Funky Chicken aka Frango Dourado
I agree with you, however I do not think you understood my meaning on quality produce, which was no way in reference to Michelin starred food, I was primarily stating good fresh produce is better than frozen chicken cubes and jarred sauces, etc, however if that is your preference, then so be it.
Moerover, I did say it was 16 months ago I visited, and now under new hands, perhaps they prepare from fresh. A good host is not the be all and end all, the end product is what one is paying for and not mine host.

Via Italia was a negative experience - Funky Chicken was positive.heini wrote:see my post under "Via Italia"

Thank you Horzah for your feed-back on this place. Gary and I will certainly try this out on our next visit in Sept as we have often thought about the odd take-away.

You must let me know how you get on - the food was cheap'n'cheerful good value finger-food.
