Property expert Andrew Winter travels to Europe to help three British property owners for whom the dream of a new life in the sun has turned into a nightmare. In this episode, Andrew advises Alison and Clive Ashby, who were forced to return to rented accommodation in the UK after their life in the sun went sour. They've been trying to sell their Spanish villa in the Jalon Valley for nearly three years to no avail. Without the sale they so badly need they will never be able to afford a property in the UK again. Andrew also meets Zillah Lock from Croydon, who sunk her savings into her dream house in the south of France, only to discover it's infested with termites that are steadily destroying her only home. And he advises Angelika Spencer, who sold everything she owned in the UK to finance a property development project in the Spanish resort of Torrevieja that went disastrously wrong. Just a thought but I hope that people who buy property in Portugal also realise that it won't be that easy to sell in the future, unless perhaps it's in the Algarve which seems to be different to the rest of Portugal.
There's a long standing tradition in Portugal to buy your own land and have an architect design your dream house. If you have the money to spend on a house, why buy someone else's second-hand house which isn't to your specifications? Perfectly good houses can take years to sell in certain areas.
