Calsada??

Hi we have now finished the inside of our house so now need to concentrate on the outside. We want to have the large drive laid in calsada?? (you know the small bricks you see everywhere). Does anyone have any contacts/prices etc. Also we shall be looking for a couple of large iron gates/fencing on top walls. I thought it best to ask here first as it's always best to go on recommendations.

I know someone who is having one laid at the moment. Looks brilliant from the photographs. I will send her an email...are you Susie chigwell...not logged in?

Does anyone know who has had this form of driveway for somewhile how sturdy it is? Does it become very uneven after a while and become loose? Hubby is convinced it is not robust I love the old cobbled look. Like the cooker hood folks, I need some amo here....to fight my corner.

If its laid correctly it is pretty stable but yes it does tend to dip or sag here and there in a large drive.......Costs.......I am having one done right now and paying 18.5 Euro per Sq metre for the Big Calsado (There are two or three colours to chose from)....I have been quoted 16.5 but prefer the guy who is charging 18.5 so went with him.....................
One builder in Carvoiero quoted me 30..so shop around....

QUESTION from me..........Anybody know of a DUTCH building company in Carvoiero...I'm told there is a good and established one and Im trying to contact him for a friend ...but I dont know where he is located..Anybody know....????

We have had an intentional sloping Calcada (I don't have a Portuguese keyboard to put the little comma under the 'c') drive for 14 years and it looks as good now as it did when it was laid. Apart from the occasional weed it needs little or no maintenance.

Highly recommended.

Hello, we have just had our driveway done in Calcada, it looks lovely, the bloke who did it has been doing calcada for sometime and his father before also did them, so he does know what he is doing. We were very pleased with his work and tidiness. very efficient, but also this is quite expensive, as it is so labour intensive, but we think it is well worth the money.

I can send photos if you like. We have friends who have had theirs down for over 10 years and it is just as good now as when it was first put down, seems very stable, but as has been said if it is laid correctly with a slope to allow the water to run off I don't think you will get a problem, as long as the base is well prepared.

Hi, I am finding out for you, we were given an estimeate which included building work done as well, so can't work it out from there. As soon as I know I will let you know, it is a very large area and we have had a pergola built into it and a cover made for the oil tank.
As soon as I get a reply will let you know, can send photos if you want to see the work?

As far as Calçada goes, anywhere between 15 and 25 € per square meter is reasonable (also may depend on the size of the stones) - remember that it is a bit of an art and requires years of experience to master.

I once watched an old portuguese man work calçada, he worked with such speed and accuracy. It was mind-boggling to see him hit a calçada stone so that would fall apart into exactly the size and shape he required.

Hi, yes G I agree with you it is quite an art, and the chap who has done our work comes from a family of 'calcada layers' as it were, so no problem there. His work at our house is very good and would recommend him to others because of it.

He has quoted me 20 - 25 euros a sq meter, depeding on the site and amount of groundwork needed.

Just try Alt 135 and you get ç. (Hold down your Alt-button; then press 135 and loosen the Alt-button and you should get ç) (first turn NumLock on and use the numbers at the right side of your key-board).

What if you use a lap top and dont have numbers on the right of the keyboard? Alt 135 does not work on the regular numbers above QWERTY.
