Advice on small boat ownership

I have been thinking of buying a small "RIB" type craft with an outboard motor for use around the Ferragudo area. It's only for day trip / fishing type excursions.

Bearing in mind we only spend about 15 to 20 weeks a year in Portugal please can you offer any advice on what's best re.

1 Entry / exit water e.g.. tow from home on trailer, store on beach, pay for shallow mooring?
2 Best place to base boat, Ferragudo, Alvor, Portimao, elsewhere.
3 Can you pay someone to caretake it particularly in the summer when we are in UK.
4 Any recommended boat suppliers who sell this type of craft.
5 Do you need a licence, insurance, other legal requirements.

If anyone has any experience good or bad I'd be grateful for your advice.

I wouldn't leave a rubber boat on a mooring. We always take them off the water and put them under cover when not in use.

Widge I went through this exercise last year and now have my own 20ft powerboat which I keep on my property. Several things you should know:-

1 Cheapest permanent mooring is Club Naval in Portimao for a <6m its €600/yr
2. You need RYA level 2 qualification - get it in UK NOT in the algarve - too expensive there - If you want a contact I can give you one in N Wales where you cna take your test..
3. Launching is free at several palces - Ferragudo is good but subject to a lot of large boats about, further up past Parchal there are 2 places Club Nautico - €4 per day to launch or 100m down the local ramp where there are plenty of moorings etc without charge
4 You need to register your boat at the Capitania in Portimao and pay the €8" RNLI" licence

You used to need an International Certificate of Competence in addition to the RYA L2 ina a lot of countries. The RYA provided these FOC to members.

Forgot about the insurance - you must have this by law. Laserblazer is correct you actually need an International Crtificate of competence - which the RYA provide free when you pass level 2.

You also have to present your ownership docs - purchase receipt.

Should also point out that it is easier and cheaper to have a UK registered boat than a PT one, as you ohave to pay the yearly Financas tax
