" Is This TOO GOOD to be True "

Post by EMM »

There is a thread on Expats Portugal which reports that Portugal has withdrawn the " Import TAX " on foreign reg cars matriculated to PT plates.
This will reduce the costs of matriculation for sometimes thousands of Euros to a few hundred.

There are claims that this has already been enacted.

Confirmation is being sought.

If so this will make a huge difference for those of us who up to now could not face the hassle and cost.
The idea of buying a LHD car in the UK to bring out and matriculate could now be much more attractive.

It will also of course affect the cost of new cars and bring down that of second hand.

Has anyone on this forum heard or have any information of what could be one of the biggest changes in years.

Yes it would be great news, but I wonder if they cut the tax in one way will they not just bring another tax instead to replace it?

The reduction of import tax does not equate with what the troika agreement says and I quote from the newspaper

"Excise taxes must be increased by raising car sales tax and cutting car tax exemptions, taxes on tobacco products must also be raised, indexing excise taxes to core inflation, and electricity excise taxes must be introduced in compliance with EU Directive 2003/96."
