Hi Licy,

Are you going to employ a pool company to maintain it? If so, why not ask them which covers work best & which to avoid.

I looked at it a few years back and concluded that the cost was prohibitive compared to the benefits but everybody's circumstances are different.

You'll be buying crockery & cutlery soon!

We have found a pool cover essential, It can add 3 degress to your pool temp by not allowing heat to escape at night.
Plus there is a slight solar heating effect when the cover is in place.

If you have trees nearby it is easier to get leaves etc of a cover than out of the pool.

There is also the safety benefit of having an obvious indication of where you pool is.

The pool cover we have makes a big difference to the temperature of our pool, though from June onwards once it gets up to a decent temperature we tend to leave it off & move it until the end of August/September. Having the pool cover means we're happy to swim in the pool from about March/April to November without using the pool heater.

Are you aware Widge that it has been suggested and in fact even be buried somewhere in the mass of Portuguese laws that swimming pools should have fixed or rigid covers capable of supporting the weight of a small child or a fence around your pool.
It is law in France.

As housholders we have responsibilty to those who share our properties to minimise any safety risks.

Even the floating pool covers will help support the weight of anyone who is unfortunate enough to fall in.

We have a very inexpensive pool cover that works quite well. It isn´t good for safety but it maintains a nice, toasty pool temp and it helps keep it clean. Most importantly, it will help with evaporation.

I am not a fan of the spendy pool covers, unless I had scads of cash lying around or a toddler. We brought ours from the US and it was €90. You can also get less expensive ones in the UK (at least, our friends did).

I've often wondered if the reverse may be true.
If a small child fell in near the side edge of the cover, could he slip under and be trapped ? And worse, be invisible ?

Personaly I think there a waist of money, Have hardly used ours in the last five years to much trouble to put on and off , pool men hate them as it takes up to much time for them and they never put them back properly plus the temperture difference is so minor its not worth the expense of a couple of thousand euros.

Trouble is Health & Safety nuts and particularly those from Brussels are intent on destroying the human being's ability to use "common sense". I know what a swimming pool looks like & I know what happens if someone who can't swim falls in the deep end. I am quite capable of living with these hazards without some overpaid idiot in Brussels telling me to spend thousands on a pool cover and loads of signs telling people to be careful it's a swimming pool.

It is pretty much the law in many parts of the US too. I don´t have a big problem with it but think a fence/wall around the garden should suffice.

Agreed if you are talking about a couple of thousand euros. If you are talking about a couple of hundred, it is worth it.

And who cares what the poolman thinks? I know our pool man doesn´t like ours but he isn´t the one paying to have the pool topped off either.

Gosh, my internet goes down so I cannot access my post and then I find huge numbers of chat. Anyway Widge, Pato, EMM etc etc to answer a small point, we have 5 sides to the pool as Widge knows, every side is different to the next, you cannot call the shape anything you and I were taught at school. In relation to a cover if we are to heat the pool I understand overnight without a cover it is fairly pointless. As for H & S, yes it is crazy. I do wonder if we could have a pool cover that was cut off straight at the point you access the pool via the concrete steps so we could then wind it up. Otherwise the only straight line butts up to the property which we could not put a roller at. Widge we are meeting on Monday for drinks, so we can discuss this too. I am going to pick your brains. Guessing about 5pm, but will phone you. Looking forward to some weather that does not typicall pi** down, like June so far in blighty. LICY

I thought I had sent you a contact in UK - "Castle hot tubs" - you send them the pool drawing and they make the cover to suit your layout. My cover which was effectively 13m x 6 m due to the cut-outs was £310 delivered. You can have it delivered directly to you removal people as well!
