Mobile Phone Network Advice Please

Can anyone please advise on the cheapest mobile network for texting the UK and calls within Portugal. Or is there no difference with the UK ones? Also where is the best place to buy phones. Much appreciated.

We got a portuguese vodaphone pay as you go....seems as good as anything.

Reception can be variable a bit like it was in the UK a few years back. It might be worth checking with people that know the area you are going to. Also don't forget that if your UK mobile is unlocked then you could just buy a SIM and try reception before buying a phone if you still want one.
