I have friends living part year in Cyprus and they are members of a local club that gets them discount at bars and restaurants, garden centres, taxis, logs, etc. They were very surprised I did not know about it (they thought we had discussed it when we visited them last year) and even more surprised that I did not know if something similar was available in the Algarve. The basic principle is that they pay an annual membership and local businesses give them reduced rates to differentiate between them and tourists.

Does it exist here? They claim they never pay full price for anything and it makes a big difference to their cost of living!!!!!!???????

Definitely try AFPOP their representative in Carvoeiro is John Large, email clarge448@googlemail.com - all members are given a directory with companies who offer discounts to members, they have regular trips, events - you get a newsletter and other advantages. Worth it. Say I sent you!

This was tried several years ago. A Gentleman by the name of Stuart tried to set up a loyalty/discount card scheme called Simplicity. He recruited businesses from all over the Algarve and put a lot of time effort and money into the venture but it failed to take off unfortunately

That is interesting - I wonder if it was the wrong time as my pals in Cyprus swear by their card. With the way thew economy is now I should think Stuart should tgry again!!!

I know Stuart had 4 or 5 people working for him and paid for a lot of advertising on radio stations and newspapers etc , I think it was a costly experience with no return whatsoever.
