Dreaded green mold

Can anyone help - arrived here last wek and found a lot of green mold on wooden parts - mainly bed headboards and under the matresses - although some on a pair of leather shoes was spectacular. Obviously due to leavng the windows closed for 7 weeks in the wet time!

However anyone know of a spray which helps prevent/preseve the wood?

We had the same in Feb, and like you all our things are new, we had to wash everything we had left in the wardrobes in Feb, except the things we had left on a rail in the Garage, really do not think there is anything that can be done, we have tried leaving all the inside doors open, wardrobes etc, we had the same on Petes shoes, had to leave them outside for days.........

Unfortunately you wont be able to stop mould growing because of the atmosphere! I know you can get a spray from Wilkinson's that you can use after the fact!

We bought some rechargeable small dehumidifiers which we hang in the wardrobes - they are filled with crystals which turn from blue to pink when they have absorbed moisture. The clothes which we had left in the wardrobes between Christmas and the end of February did not have any mould on them so they are obviously working.

We did notice yesterday in a brochure we had received from the same people you were doing one which could be recharged in a microwave and was suitable for using in drawers

We used to have an electric dehumidifier in our annexe, which was very damp in the winter. It often filled the container, so we discharge the water through the wall to a flower bed. We also did a considerable amount of work to the building, and have not needed a dehumidifier for several years. However, this year has been so wet we did get some minor damage from mould.

Only small but great for wardrobes and cupboards

We use the rechargeble ( crystal ) filled containers, ( the largest we can get ).

We put these in the wardrobes and cold areas and fingers crossed we have not had any problems this winter.

It feeds on moisture, therefore, removing moisture will keep it under control. Adequate heating and ventilation will prevent/curtail it. Once it has established itself a mild solution of bleach and soapy water will kill it off. However, do not use this on leather!

They also do dehumidifier bags, rechargeable in a microwave, more suitable for small spaces such as drawers. £6.99 for three.

We have a year round maid....more expensive maybe,,,,,but NO mould

Thanks for the tips everyone - I guess its a combination of leaving windows slightly open, bags of silica gel everywhere (recharge in mcrowave!) and shoot the rain dance Indian.

We have obtained some packs from Netto - £1 each, which are calcium Chloride - they will last approx 1 month. However If you can get it - Bulk Silica gel crystals are the ones to use - they can be regenerated in the microwave.
