UK Car Insurance in Portugal

Post by Bruce Wallis »

Can anybody give me the definitive on how long you can bring a UK reg car over to Portugal.

I discovered that most UK insurance companies only insure you on your UK insurance for between 60 and 90 days, depending on insurer, and your cover automatically drops from fully comp to 3rd party only once you leave UK shores.

I have paid a premium to have my cover extended for 4 months at fully comp.

What experiences have others had??

You can legally use your car here for up to six months in a year. Therafter you have to export it or matriculate it.

When I was still based in the UK I had to change from Directline because the European cover was limited to 90 days - althought it did not drop to third party outside the UK. Most of the other companies I tried were the same but eventually I found that Saga offered 365 days fully comp european cover in the basic premium at not much more than I had been paying with Directline. If I remember rightly I also had to pay extra at Directline to extend cover abroad so the Saga policy offered excellent value. This was about 7 years ago now so things might have changed but worth enquiring.
