Sim Cards

Post by fmm »

My OH has an XDA II mobile phone (PDA) which he no longer uses. I would like to take this to Portugal and use it there on a pay as you go basis. The phone also allows internet access, so this would be useful as well. Does anyone know who would be the best people to talk to about setting the phone up as a pay as you go phone in Portugal. It will live there full time.

Thanks for any help on this!

All the major networks wil sell you a pay as you go sim for an existing phone. I got a vodafone sim for €10. There are several tariffs to choose from as in the UK; depending on your type of use ie mainly calling other vodafones rather than landlines and other networks. Costs apout 20 cents a minute peak time. Top up via shop, multibanco or internet banking. The shops will set up the menu in English and voice mail in English too if you wish. Needs to be used once every 180 days to keep the number active. Not sure about data transmission or internet access

Thanks a lot. I will send OH investigating on his trip in a few weeks time. I am spending about £50 a week on intenret access at the moment when I am im Portugal, so hopefully we can find a tarriff which will allow me the internet as well as phone calls.

Just been talking to someone who uses mobile/laptop combination Apparently vodafone.pt only have a 3G service on a monthly fee basis. I understand it ranges from €18 per month at 384kbps with a 1GB cap to €33 per month with a 3.6mbps speed and a 5GB cap

At the moment I use GPRS for internet access on the phone itself. This is cheap in the UK, but expensive when I use the UK version in Portugal. i am hoping that I can purchase GPRS usage in Portugal - any ideas?

Do you know if this can be used in Carvoeiro (Rocha Brava) . A similar service from Optimus does not service this area.
