We will be over in about 3 weeks and will give him a call. If we manage to crack this problem, I will report back, for the benefit of others. With hindsight I guess the problem is that we bought a villa that had only ever been used as a rental for warm weather use, and we are trying to equip it for year round occupation. But we will get there!

A brief update. Following nightrider's advice I emailed EDP. Took a week for a reply, but today had confirmation that they would send a "team" around to investigate as soon as possible. They also provided the name and phone number for a local contact - Madame Teresa - to arrange the visit. They do actually have a group called EDP Online. Progress!

I know someone who got their electrician to uprate the fuse,it´s not 100% legal,but it saves a lot of fannying about.

Just for info. For the electrician to do that, he must tamper with EDP property and remove the seal. All's well and good until you need to get the EDP round for something. Each broken seal is worth a 1,000 euro fine (if they wish to fine you!). I know because I had two broken seals, one on my main fuse box and one on the meter. Luckily, I wasn't fined but could have been.

I think tampering would be a last resort, for the reasons you state Gadjo. Fortunately looks like you can take the legitimate route and still get the problem fixed.
