Are pets (cats and dogs) chipped in Portugal? It's one way of retrieving a 'missing' pet if it turns up at the vets.

Yes they are but as Steve says - its only done by responsible owners and/or owners of pedigree pets. We got our dog back because he was chipped and some property owning Brits found him near their home in Portimao and took the time to have him checked - before contacting us. We were very grateful. That was the second time he 'went' but since then he does not wander at all.

The cats are chipped but they don't go far - they know when they are well off.
