There is a system which has been available for a couple of years now. Requires an Internet connection and a gizmo shaped like a star which you hold next to the control unit in the house to engage, very simple. There is a web cam attached pointing to front door or other point of likely entry and when broached takes photos every 10seconds and loads on to a designated site on t'internet. I had a mail shot last week and think it was on offer for around 500 Euros. All wireless too which makes things a bit easier to install

Is this in addition to an alarm?

Shutters are good first line of defence, but they serve other vital uses as well.

Stop the sun from fading your furniture curtain etc and stop you villa become unbearably hot in the summer.
If you have no shuuters and we get sunnny days and cold nights the temp difference in your villa will add to the damp/condensation problems that beset so many with properties in the Algarve.

For now however shutters are out of budget. When we can install we will have to get the old fashioned version as the electric is not pre installed. I guess I can't have everything - sadly.

Seriously reconsider shutters even the louvre side hung sort.
An empty house without shutters is an open invitation even with an alarm.
If you can only afford the first floor at this stage fit them.
I would say that 90% plus of the properties we see even those with permanent residents have shutters
of one sort or another.

I do want them, in fact if I could have had the posh electric ones I would. In relation to lower/first floor, our build is very different as the only part at driveway level is actually the front door which then goes up a stair case to what could be considered a bungalow. Our villa is on a steep slope which will be fenced in all around. We certainly have to factor in a gate before shutters as people could then get onto the plot if the boundary is not properly secure. I don't know how good the old fashioned version shutters are, but I certainly take your point. Looks like some more nagging to the tree at the end of the garden, which does not apper to have any fruit/leaves on it. I wonder if there is anyone that can comment as to how easy someone would find that type of shutter with a spade or crow bar.

Nothing is 100% foolproof but you are aiming to discourage the opportunist thief and as we have know them climb up to first floor balcones ( not in Carvoeiro ) when they have seen an open door so as in the UK assume the worst.

Could not agree more although the Nice Burglar did enter through our Balcony here in Carvoeiro. As I have said before, they will get in any way they can. Since the Intrusion last year, without being accused of Advertising, we have found that the best Alarm System is Securitas Direct. It does everything required, with Cameras, Sensors, Zone Control and separate Sim Line to your Mobile or friends. Reasonable initial cost and monthly cost and excellent support. Can even press a fob by the bed which will summon the Police discreetly or call the Emergency Services.
Although nothing is guaranteed, at least it gives us a little peace of mind.

picking up on the point about shutters having a dual purpose - stopping the sunlight fading furniture etc, we are in colina verde and the builder was obliged to stick to those green shutters which where were already on the 'older' properties up there.(I know he didn't want to, he wanted to install those electronic ones but lagoa camera insisted on the green ones) don't know how much of a deterrent they are to robbers but they are excellent for controlling the amount of light/sunlight/breeze you allow through the rooms. they have a little wheel half way down on all the panels and you use this wheel to control the opening of each individual panel of the shutters. ie in the kitchen there are 4 wheels controling the 4 individual panels ditto in the bedroom and in the sitting room both shutter doors have 4 panels each so different sizes are available. the only thing to remember though is that at peak sun times you have to close the patio doors as well as the shutters as the shutter itself becomes like a hotplate, but you can still control the light by opening the panels slightly. great in the morning too if you open the bedroom ones slighty, you wake up to a gentle natural light coming in.

Did not know I had been banned. Heaven knows why. I have only made a few posts and they have always been Polite and Positive.

If I remember, the initial outlay was about 450 Euros and the Monthly charge about 35 Euros. As far as I am concerned, a great system and much cheaper than than the ADT one I had in the UK.

I would have replied to the PM but it said some recipients disable their PM's or something like that. we come out on 7September so it would be good to get a quote from them, but I don't know if they are based in CVO.
