I've got an old computer which I've taken out to my house in Carvoeiro, I plan to connect to the internet and make the service available to my rental clients.
Could anyone please advise me on the cost of the various types of ISP 's available in portugal. I'm probably looking to have some kind of dial up connection but would welcome any suggestions/advice..

Just a minor thought...yes lads I am capable of many of those when it comes to anything technical
If you have broadband + a low cost call provider some only charge about 5p for international calls + no minimum calls cost and second billing.
You can also have itemised billing, from memory + I think with some you can also up the rates so you make money. (will double check that again)
Would it not be possible to ask for a refundable deposit? I am sure a property with a phone and internet connection would to me, be more desirable and I would pay extra for the privilege.
Just a thought.....no experience of letting, just looking from a tenants point of view as I was desperate to rent a property with a phone.

Forgot to mention re the porn sites...would it be possible to have some sort of disclaimer written into your let/rental agreement including some legal mumbo jumbo that protects you re porn sites..so they know you will prosecute if internet usage abused????

As far as internet connections go, you have two options at your disposal.
The first is to get an ADSL broadband. The problem with this, is that you have a download/upload limit set by the providers - if anybody where to download massive amounts of data (movies, songs, etc) they may exceed this limit and that will cost you a bunch. Also, you are not allowed to run a phone meter or alarm system on the same phone line, as these will disrupt the ADSL signal.
The second (one that I have been playing with for the last few months), that is currently limited to certain areas but should be extending over the course of the next few months, is a solution were wireless coverage provides access to the internet. This scenario provides an access point in shape of a network plug in the house to a wireless network that will connect its users to the internet. Download and upload limitations are inexistent making it a true flatrate at speeds ranging from 128 to 512.
Content management, if you set up a computer for your clients should not be too complicated - as an administrator, you set up firewall and internet explorer restrictions to certain sites (Norton Firewall has a parental control list integrated). You then issue a guest user account to your customers to prevent them accessing and changing these restrictions.
*Edit* there is also software like netnanny http://www.netnanny.com/ that regularly updates restricted site lists.

One carrier I contacted you prepay...so once the credit is gone it is gone!!
You can then have a standard dial up, you can ask your clients what amount of phone credit they require....which they pay for in advance. In hotels we used to have to pay loads for internet...but it was always busy
Gambrius...re CPS you prefix a code in front of the number you are dialing. Some do have a box...which is what he would need... are you saying this will interfere with the broadband..?

I dont think the prefix calls interfere with broadband, as they only use the narrow phone band, but we have not experimented with this yet.
If the prefix calls do not require any additional equipment, the calls are monitored remotely and they should not interfere but if the line has an impulse signal for a meter to monitor the costs, the ADSL signal will probably be disrupted.
